This device looked like a good idea, as I thought it opened at the bottom. You have to squeese the two bottom halves together which are spring loaded, and the top opens up. If the item is a larger tomato or onion, the two bottom halves come together, and you can not stand it upright on a flat surface as it will fall over. It also is next to impossible to hold it in your hand to make the cuts. It has to be much larger than it is, unless you intend to use it for items up to around 2-2 1/2 inches in diameter.

Easy to use and to clean. Wonderful for slicing tomatoes and onions. So glad I found this.
