David Busch's Nikon D700: Guide to Digital Slr Photography

hi, I am banker, just got my Nikon D7000 as major upgrade from point and shoot compact cameras, i cant describe how much i was lost with the endless features of the D7000, luckily that feeling did not last long , as i got David's book and it took me slowly step by step , i just finished first 2 chapters and i already feels so good about my camera. the book, in very simple words, (even for non native English speaking), explain , every part of the D7000, what it is for, how to use, and supported with examples, the book is so smooth, it does not give you chunk of data all of the sudden, it builds it gradually in logical way, even if you dont know anything about Digital Photography like me, even if you are on higher than beginner level, the book simply guilde to advanced levels till the max use of the camera without getting lost. The book fully recommended,almost must have, also for beginners, i recommend the other David Busch'S book on "Quick Snap Guide to Photo Gear", for choosing Tripod,lens,filter, memory card, bag, etc. and you could go easily wrong in buying items that poorly designed or over priced for no actual use.

I purchased Dave's book describing how to use my previous camera. I was so pleased with the book I decided to wait for his book describing how to use my new Nikon D7000. It was well worth the wait. Dave's book is clearly written and comprehensive. He starts by describing what you will receive with your new camera and how each of these items is to be used. Dave indicates why each item is important, and in some cases why the item is less important (think the BS-1 accessory shoe cover). There are numerous `tips' that only an experienced photographer can share such as downloading the D7000 User's Manual to a thumb drive and keep it with you so you can reference it as necessary. Among the many things I like is that Dave has several easy to understand tables indicating not only the numerous camera menu settings, but the default value for each setting AND a recommended setting for each of these settings depending on the type of shooting you will be doing. (Studio flash, portrait, sports indoors, sports outdoors just to name a few.) With a camera as sophisticated as the D7000, Dave's book is a must.

Useful information without the cross references found in owner's manual. Clear and easy to understand, giving an overall knowledge of the camera. I think it sometimes could be a little more straight to the point though it seems to be OK for the novice. Very satisfied.

This is an excellent reference book for D7000 owners. I purchased my D7000 a couple of months ago and found the user's manual to be a bit short of helpful. Leaving the okay-but-not-enough manual in favor of YouTube's tutorial videos, I did rather well: I even learned how to get that beautiful bokeh that I admire so much. Then I ran across this book and am VERY pleased to have found a reference that actually communicates with the reader. The large, clearly marked photos let the reader know exactly what is being spoken of and where the controlling buttons, etc. are located. I do agree, however, with one reviewer who said that giving step-by-step directions, as in 1, 2, 3, etc., would have been a plus. Nevertheless, if you read...not skim...you will be able to follow the well written instructions without a problem. In my opinion, they are VERY clearly written. There's also a glossary, which is helpful to those who are not familiar with photographic terms. The book is quite large (8" x almost 10") and contains 534 (including the index) pages of high-quality paper, which makes it somewhat weighty. It's definitely not your average pocket manual. It's quite a beautiful book, so I hesitate to mark it with anything other than small Post-It Notes. This reference would be a welcome gift for any D7000 owner...possibly short of a seasoned, pro photographer who already knows the ropes. The fourteen chapters expose all of the bells and whistles of the D7000...and there are many; the author certainly helps you to get your money's worth from your Nikon. Too bad this book arrived AFTER I had left to go street shooting on the Country Club Plaza in Kansas City with a friend (LOTS of photo ops THERE!) because it was a very sunny day and I was having trouble reading the LCD display. I now know that there's a DIMMER setting for the LCD display that eliminates that problem. Ya gotta love it! BOTTOM LINE: The Nikon D7000 is a very good mid-level DSLR camera (although some pros use it) with LOTS of features that can make even a ho-hum photographer look good...if he/she learns to use them. This book, along with your D7000, can definitely guide you to becoming a great photographer!

This is definitely THE missing manual to have for the D7000. One of my colleagues recommended it and I could not possibly like it more. Not only is it a how-to-operate the camera (which has more features than I can even count much less understand using the provided "manual" from Nikon), it is a how-to-use the camera to take the best photos possible. It has been some years since I have used a camera in a serious way, and this book is helping me brush up on my understanding of depth of field, using lenses to their best advantage, etc. All the things that I have forgotten in the years since I quit using film cameras. The book is beautifully produced on nice heavy paper, is well organized and easy to follow, with lots of large color photos and half page menu displays (unlike the microscopic ones in Nikon's manual). The book is a beast though, so I recommend getting the companion field guide, which is just the right size for throwing in your camera bag. It will be some time before I get all the settings and options gathered and organized in my brain, or perhaps I never will, so each book will be a great resource.

I recently purchased a Nikon D7000 after owning a D80 for many years. I'm not new to digital photography but I wanted to learn how to use my new camera and to take advantage of many of its features. The issue I have with the Nikon manual is that it's really dense and there isn't much context provided when the features are described. I should also add that I buy a lot of reference books with the intent of reading them but I rarely make it halfway through before I get bored or something else catches my interest. This is the first time I've read one of David Busch's guides and the first time that I've actually read a guide to anything from cover to cover. As I've gone through it I've been adding some Post-It Tape Flags on the pages were I've found some precious bits of information that I want to go back to. In addition to being a comprehensive guide to the D7000 it's also a great intro/review of digital photography and photography concepts in general. I can't recommend it enough.

The D7000 is more sophisticated than the D70, D80, and D90, which I was already familiar with. I had looked at the D7000 Nikon manual for answers to specific questions that I had, only to get very frustrated and not find an understandable explanation. I had read a Peter Innova ebook as well as a Thom Hogan ebook for two of the previous Nikon DSLRs that I owned, but the David Busch book is by far my favorite. I also like the portability of having a book with me. I find that he explains things well, but not to a point where it is condescending to the reader. Although I'm only around page 60 right now, I feel I have already learned a lot. I like the full color pictures of the camera as well as how menu items are displayed in full color and cover most of the page. He gives practical reasons why you should/shouldn't use certain settings. When I own a camera, I want to know how to use everything on the camera. Although this is going to take a very long time to read, I feel it is well worth my time.

This book (David Busch's Nikon D7000 Guide to Digital SLR Photography) contains huge amounts of information and is very useful for persons making their way around a new camers, however, the book was found rather verbose at times. In spite of any criticism it is believed this book is a worthwhile purchase. Brash

This really is quite a tome, - a most comprehensive and well written book, - far better and clearer read than the Nikon D7000 manual that comes with the camera. I thoroughly recommend it to all but professional photographers and the most experienced amatuer purchasers of the camera. However, as complete, clear and excellent as it undoubtedly is, it is not, - nor was it intended to be, - a book one might just pop into one's camera bag or rucksack. It is just too darn big and heavy! For such convenience, David Busch's "Compact Field Guide for the Nikon D7000", containing essential information about settings, menus and options in a spiral-bound lay-flat book is the answer. He is an excellent writer of Nikon camera guides, probably the very best in my view. I am delighted to have this book as a reference.

It is the perfect way to deeply understand how the D7000 works. No secrets, but it explains very well some feature not so well documented...
