I came across this gate and really liked it, but thought it was too expensive
To prevent our dog from accessing a very expensive rug in the living room, we needed to gate off a 3 foot opening by the stairs and a 5 foot opening by the kitchen. While researching my options, I came across this gate and really liked it, but thought it was too expensive. After looking into other options, I realized that this convertible gate could actually be used to block both entrances and was therefore a cheaper alternative than purchasing two separate gates. The convertible gate includes 6 individual sections, so I have 2 wall sections in a V shape by the stairs and a 3-piece section (with a gate portion in the middle of two wall sections) in a \_/ configuration by the kitchen, with the 6th section currently stored in a closet. The good:-The gate is high quality and looks great. I am much happier with this gate than I would have been with two cheap plastic gates.-The gate is very flexible and can be used in other arrangements. If we want to use the gate elsewhere, we can combine the sections and create a pen or a long wall.-Overall, the pieces are sturdy for a standalone gateThings to consider:-In our configuration, each panel is at an angle to its neighbor, so we can't use the included plastic pieces that make the gate more rigid. The plastic pieces would be extremely helpful for straight connections, such as stretching the gate across a room, but can't be installed if the sections are at an angle to each other. Having plastic pieces with a 45 degree or 90 degree option would be very handy for increasing the rigidity in other configurations.-While the pieces are sturdy for a standalone gate, we may need to attach the ends to the wall when our son begins walking. If he were to try to support himself with the gate, it may fall over (depending on the direction of the wall sections at the end, of course). The gate still receives 5 stars because this is not a flaw so much as a consideration when purchasing a gate with children. The bad:-Only complaint that we have is that the gate section only latches at the bottom. Meaning, to latch the gate, you lift the gate portion off of a bottom portion and guide the gate portion until it "latches" (a piece protruding from the gate portion rests in a nook in the bottom portion). It would be even better if the gate latched near the top as well, providing two latches. While my dog hasn't shown an interest in kicking/pushing on the gate, my guess is it would be easy to open if any upward force is used.Overall, we love the gate and think that it is worth the money. If we had a smaller opening to block, or if the opening was straightforward with 90 degree angles, we might have spent less on a simple gate. For our use, however, we much prefer this product to our existing gates (simple tension installed baby gate, tension installed tall gate with a cat door).

Peace is restored to the house.
This is an amazing product, nearly perfect. I am so glad that I listened to the good reviews. I did not have any of the negative experiences mentioned in those few 2 or 3-star comments. My husband was able to put it together with no trouble. We are now able to get rid of three other items of dog paraphernalia: a big crate, a free-standing gate, and a pen! I have two little dogs, so I could have gotten away with it not being as tall (31 inches), but it's beautiful so it doesn't matter. I can see that big or rambunctious jumpers might be able to knock it down when it's used as a gate or jump out of it when it's used as a pen, but those kinds of dogs might be hard to confine anyway. The gate works exactly as I expected, and the door panel is sufficiently wide to get through when you use it as a room divider (same as the other panels about 31 inches wide opening , and even the four-panel version makes a big enough pen for my two girls when I have to use it as as pen/crate (about 31 inches square inside measurement or 34 inches x 31 inches. When I use it as a pen, I love having the door so the girls can go in on their own, and I don't have to lift them over, as I did with the baby play pen I was using. The Richell site has the full manual online so you can see the cautions about using it as a room divider with respect to how to set it up. It just shows you the way to stand it so the dogs can't easily knock it over. Overall, I love it and am thrilled with the purchase, expensive though it was. I don't understand the measurements on the Amazon site, "Measures 130 by 31-1/2 by 13/16." Each panel is about 31" square and flexible where they join so you can easily create whatever configuration you need. The panels are also easily disassembled by just removing a pin at the joint. The panels fold easily, and are not heavy or cumbersome. Much easier than my free-standing gate which was an eyesore in the room when not in use. Now, if I want to I can fold the whole business and leave no doggy stuff out when guests arrive.I never had to have so much "dog stuff" until we adopted the second dog, but she's a chewer, does not have reliable potty training, and needs to be confined if I can't keep eyes on her. This is big enough and strong enough so that this little energizer bunny (Yorkie: 7 pounds) is safe and so is my house, and the love muffin (Maltese:8 pounds) can be with her if she wants. Peace is restored to the house.

Highly Recommend
Absolutely recommend this gate. I have a living room/dining room combo, and I have placed my office in the dining room. I use the gate in the L shape to divide off my office area from the living room. It was incredibly easily to assemble and it looks very high class. I am very pleased and highly recommend it. One thing to note, is that while it does not tip over, it does rock back and forth at the end, so while it is indeed stand alone, if you're wanting the end to be straight, then I recommend placing something on either side of the end to secure it a bit. I think it would be nice to have optional feet. Also, I wish they had a 1/2 panel. In my area, 6 panels is just a little too bit but 5 panels is too small. I would love to have a 1/2 panel. but that is just specific to my area, not a criticism of the product at all :) Anyway, I am very pleased with the ease of use, the look and the use of the gate. I have had several compliments on it already. And the door way is very easy to open and easy to leave open when not needed. It swings both directions so I can open it whichever way works better for me at time.Added Comment - I got a new 40 pound puppy this week and this little guy every now and then does the "puppy crazies". He rassles with his bed, falls his entire body up against the gate, he leans against the gate, sleeps against the gate. and it continues to hold steady. It may rock a little but it doesn't come down. Plus I've received numerous compliments on how nice it looks in my home.

Looks good and works great.
We have been looking for something to keep our two yorkies from doing their business on our hardwood in the great room for two years. We have a 12' opening to secure. Have tried room dividers and expensive scandinavian baby fence/gate combinations that had to be screwed to walls or expensive newell posts. Nothing was effective. Out of exasperation, I was even considering having something custom built. Then I found this on line. We got it today. Set up in less than 15 minutes and once configured could not have fit the opening any closer if it had been purpose built. It is attractive and functional and complements our woodwork. We are very pleased with it. The built in access gate is a great feature.

It looks exactly like the picture
It looks exactly like the picture! in order to stay sturdy, needs to be set up diagonal just like the example on the picture, completely straight does not work. We bought the six panel and it divides our fourteeen foot room nicely. Love the gate, easy to open and close. Not an eye soar like the plastic ones. Looks like part of the room. Very satisfied with this product

As described
Attractive, easy to assemble and very versatile. Works as a dog crate without a top or a spacious pen. Door latch a little unpredictable - easy to add a tie to further secure

Fine looking and good value; perfect with small improvements.
The quality is good and it is really fine looking. It has been great for housebraking and crate training our Shiba "Inu" puppy (smallest japanese breed of the spitz family). However, it needs to be improved with some sort of reinforcement when used as a play pen; a type of locking mechanism or support to lock the panels when aligned together. These would make the "walls" more stable. We worry that it will not serve it's purpose when she grows up and reaches her adult strength. It seems wobbly and she might be able to move it around. The lock of the door also needs improvement, it locks well from the bottom but not from the top lock. However, I would certainly recommend this product. It would just be perfect with small improvements.
