this book is a good reading copy for those interested in a travel log ...
Photo images are lower quality reproductions than those appearing in the original edition. However, this book is a good reading copy for those interested in a travel log of a famous beekeeper touring the Mediterranean world during a series of voyages from 1950 to 1977.

A report turned into a book
This could have been a travelogue of a beekeeper. Towards the end, brother Adam states that he did over 80000 miles in a car, as well as flight and sea miles. I'm sure he must have had adventures, this was in the early 50's and in the early 60's, but he conveys almost nothing other than some general factual data about the various strains of bees and their supposed original habitat. The data on the strains of bees is fairly general and probably not that much of interest 50 years later. We now have different crossbred strains that we work from.Brother Adam does an analysis of the strains of bees at the end, but I wouldn't call it an analysis to end all analysis.Sadly, this doesn't succeed at being either a research piece or a travelogue. Its like a long report that someone turned into a short book.Brother Adam has a wealth of knowledge and a clear view for beekeeping, but it doesn't come out in this book. Thus, this book is only of interest and value to archivists in the field of beekeeping. I don't see much in it that can be extracted for today's use that isn't found in "Beekeeping at Buckfast Abbey" or other books.

Vielen Lieben Dank. :)

An excellent narrative by Brother Adams describing his trips around Europe ...
An excellent narrative by Brother Adams describing his trips around Europe and North Africa in search of different strains of honey bees.. A travelogue seen through the eye of a master beekeeper giving fascinating insights into the various strains of bees and forage available in different countries.Wonderful descriptions and pictures (poor quality B&W alas, but sufficient for purpose) of the local methods used for keeping bees and the problems (pests and predators) they face in each country.A remarkable book. My only downside would be that it can be a bit tedious in places, but there is no other book (that I'm aware of) that come close to matching this for it's breadth and descriptions of the various strains of Honey bees and their good and bad qualities that covers so many countries.
