Makes a great gift
I bought this as a Christmas gift for a very outdoorsy guy in my life. He uses it to cross reference mushrooms he forages, it's super useful for our Northern Colorado region. Great full color guide!

Colorado foragers NEED this handbook it's #1
This is a concise handbook with detailed photos for mushroom foraging in Colorado. The author is an expert who has been at the helm of the mycology department at Denver botanical gardens for many years. I have given this book as a gift to many of my fellow mycology enthusiasts!

Four Corners Mycological Society
As the president of the Four Corners Mycological Society, based in SW Colorado, we incorporate all Four States into our club. I highly recommend this book. It is a reprint from an earlier rendition, I believe from the 80's... and so there is some information that is antiquated. But that is okay..It is a good base book for anyone foraging for mushrooms in the Rockies.Mush Love!!!~Rayne

Not really a field guide
95% of people who would buy a book like this mostly just want the common name and the edibility. This book drops the ball on both. As far as being a scientific textbook it's probably okay, but why not add the two items that everybody is looking for? Leave this one at home when you're out in the woods actually looking for mushrooms.Other notes - I've been using this book than I thought I would, and she does include common names more often than I thought. However, she also uses the metric system, and this American has no idea how long a centimeter is...... overall I bumped it up another star

Unclear on edibility
This is a really comprehensive book. I especially liked the section on toxicity and the different types. My one complaint is edibility on the individual mushroom descriptions. I understand why the author did not make it explicit, to encourage people to really use their knowledge before consuming. One of my favorite mushroom books, Mushrooms of the Redwood Coast, is extremely explicit and goes into a why, lookalikes or background. This is incredibly helpful. Unfortunately edibility here is buried in descriptions and missing on too many. In my mind this makes it more difficult for users to expand their knowledge. I'd probably give this a 3.5 star because of that but I'll give it 4 because everything else is so well done.

This is one of two excellent mushroom guide books for the Rocky Mountain Region and ...
This is one of two excellent mushroom guide books for the Rocky Mountain Region and in my case, Colorado. The only other field guide that comes close is the book titled "The Essential Guide to Rocky Mountain Mushrooms by Habitat )", which is also authored by Vera S. Evenson from the Denver Botanical Gardens. In my opinion the two are complimentary guides and the best i have found for our region.*This books main strength lies in the fact that it is arranged *By Mushroom Family*. For those of us who are new to mushroom hunting this is a really good guide and helps me know how mushroom family types are similar and different and which ones are edible and which ones are not. Excellent guide, can't recommend a better book, except for maybe the other one i mentioned above already.

As New Hobbiest, This is a Really Good Reference
I just started to get into mushrooms, and as I'm learning and just going out and exploring this new view on my hikes this book has been very informative.
