A great way to play classic games, but there's a catch.
As a fan of the Sega Genesis Mini and NES and SNES Classic, I was pleased when the TurboGrafx-16 Mini was announced. It arrived efficiently packaged. Though it's easily the largest of my four mini consoles, it's still not THAT big. After hooking up the console, I browsed through the titles, many of which I wasn't familiar with. There are a lot of great titles here, many fun games that I missed out on due to not owning a Turbo 16 back in the day. Unfortunately, a lot of the titles are only in Japanese with no option to play them in English. The most glaring example of this is Snatcher, an early Hideo Kojima game I've heard quite a bit about. Unless I someday learn to read Kanji, this version of this text-heavy game will remain beyond me. Some of the Japanese games like Castlevania: Rondo of Blood, are perfectly playable by Western audiences, but an English translation for it and the other Japanese-only games would have been great. I would have gladly waited for Konami, this console's developer or M2, the console's manufacturer, to include optional translations, but that didn't happen. That's the reason I'm giving this console four stars rather than five. The console's interface is the best yet out of the four mini consoles I own. On the NES and SNES Classics, you have to hit reset to save your progress, load a saved state, or switch games. On the Sega Genesis Mini, which was also made by M2, you have to hold Start for several seconds to bring up a menu. On this console, you simply hit Select and Run at the same time and instantly bring up the menu. It's faster and simpler than the other consoles. Moreover, you can sort the games by release date, by the console it was originally on, and by title. Handy! The TurboGrafx-16 Mini isn't for everyone, but if you're a video game collector or retro gaming enthusiast who doesn't want to bother with emulation, this is the console for you . . . especially if you can read Japanese!
