Wonderful
I love these. We upgraded from a kiddy size (compared to these) and I could not be happier. I went from a little Sony AV Receiver and speakers at 5.1 to these and am thrilled. First, they came quickly at a great price and the packaging was a little too much, but I am happy I had no damage and the shipper wanted these to arrive perfect and took every precaution to make sure these speakers were safe. So once you get this man sized box unpacked the fun can begin. Second, the install (with right AV Receiver) isn't hard at all. There were quick set up instructions in the box and the complete manual on CD that takes you step by step when you need help. I didn't need the wires that came with these because our house is wired, but I would say they seemed a little small for these speakers. Once you get all the wires in the right spots you can hook it all up. A 7.1 can be confusing but just take your time and hook up the speaker to the AV in the right spots. We bought an Onkyo tx nr616 AV reciever with these and love this combo....our old one was a baby compared to these. Getting the rights speakers, front back surround back etc was a little tricky, had to do 2 speakers over again. But it took relatively little time to get this all going right. Third, setup...once everything is hooked up the actual setup wasn't that hard. Just follow the initial setup and we did the complete calibration of these on our AV reciever and it sounds amazing. The speakers are a great size, the ones on our walls are big without being overpowering, they look great and they sound great. The tall front speakers came with enough wire to move around, they are a great height and sound wonderful. The sub is huge, a good around 2 feet tall and is powered, so it can really put out some bass sounds. Sound of these speakers is by far the best we have had. Our first 7.1 system and we love it. The sounds, once set up and calibrated, we used the little mic that came with out Onkyo AV Receiver for a perfect surround sound set up. We were able to set up each speaker, volume, equalization everything and it was easy to do. These speakers really surround you when watching a movie, or playing a game, watching TV isn't as great (because of TV recording sounds) but still is better than TV speakers. These can shake the house when they are really being used.:) But that is ok with me. I love these and am very happy with them so far.

Terrific Sonic Synergy and an Amazing Value
After purchasing an Onkyo TX - NR609 7.2 Channel Network THX Certified A/V Receiver , I wanted a 7.1 speaker system that 1. would best complement its features and capabilities, 2. had tallboy front speakers (to best complement our living room setup), 3. had received high ratings from consumers and reputable A/V websites, and 4. was reasonably priced. The SKS-HT870 met all four conditions and then blew away my expectations. As I slowly "built" the speaker system over a couple of days, starting with 3.0 (front and center speakers), then 3.1 (the subwoofer), then 5.1 (the surround speakers), then 7.1 (the surround back speakers), I was able to hear how the different 870 speaker types enriched the "sound image" with each addition and it was truly amazing as a convert to 7.1 from 2.0. The design specs of the speakers and the numerous audio settings of the 609 combine into a sonic synergy I didn't think possible for the money I spent on the two. It was exactly the result I was hoping for with the complete upgrade of our home A/V entertainment system. I had to pay special attention to the sub-woofer since although I do love bass, I didn't want to overpower the living room, or my wife, with too much bass "pounding". With adjustments of the sub-woofer's output level knob and the 609's bass and sub-woofer settings, low freqs are produced seamlessly for both music and movies. Using the physical and AVR settings, I've achieved the desired "omni-directional" sub-woofer output ("bass coming from everywhere and nowhere", meaning you can sense the bass but you're not able to tell where the subwoofer is located with your eyes closed) even though it's only 4 feet from where we sit! One recommendation that should not surprise anyone - instead of using the Onkyo supplied 22 gauge speaker wires (nicely color coded to match each speaker "+" spring clip) and the thin RCA-RCA sub-woofer cable, upgrade to thicker wires. I went with RCA AH1450SN 14-Gauge Speaker Wire (50 ft) for the 7 and a Mediabridge Ultra Series - Dual Shielded Subwoofer Cable - RCA to RCA Gold Plated Pro Grade Connectors (25 Feet) . After using the Onkyo supplied sub-woofer cable for a couple of days while waiting for my new MB cable to arrive, I definitely could hear an increase in the "richness" of the sub-woofer produced bass with the new MB cable. It might just be that I finally tweaked the sub-woofer's level setting and the 609 bass / sub-woofer settings just right but after I installed the MB cable the sub-woofer seemed to be more responsive to low freqs; in other words, it appeared to come out of standby more often (a sometimes mentioned concern in other reviews). The sound from the 7 speakers improved markedly as well. Of note, the packaging was well done and all pieces arrived with zero damage. The system came in a single box of thick cardboard the size of a medium sized refrigerator (only slightly exaggerating) and was heavy enough to require use of a dolly from the delivery truck to my front door. Everything was very well protected and tightly packed in molded styrofoam with plastic banding, thin foam wrapping, and plastic sheeting. The attractive, shiny black top caps of the tallboys, side caps of the center speaker, and the front face piece of the sub-woofer were all completely protected with adhered plastic sheeting and were scratch free. The SKS-HT870 is 7.1 speaker system that has completely exceeded my expectations with its outstanding "sonic immersion". With it also being a very attractive addition to our living room and a great value ("bang (and bass) for the buck"), I highly recommend it to Onkyo AVR owners and everyone else. P.S. Using the 609's built in Audyssey 2EQ automatic speaker setup (using an included calibrated microphone), the 807 speaker system sounds even better. The easy to follow procedure adjusted individual speaker crossover freq and sound level settings as well as determined speaker distance from the listening position. One immediately obvious improvement was that we're able to watch streaming movies at a much lower volume but with the same high clarity as before, particularly dialog.

Excellent speaker set and very reasonable too!!!!
I'm using these speakers w/ Onkyo-608 after returning another Onkyo spkr set HT750 (which was too big and not as good as this one). Sound quality is awesome and improved even more after using Audyssey setup. Spkr don't look bad at all. I like tallboys, it matches perfect w/ my TV stand. Other speakers are little bit big (~9") compared to what's available in market but its not bulky. For many days, I considered these spkrs along with Polk1600, RM705, 6750, HarmonKrdn, Energy etc but all of those were more expensive and 5.1 spkrs. Certainly those speakers look stylish and smaller but subwoofer is in 50-100W range. Onkyo-870 comes with thundering 230w subwoofer.. more than enough to feel booms... thuds... and blasts... Fry's had these speakers on display as part of Onkyo7300 HTIB, so I checked actual size before buying it. Currently I'm using only 5.1 and plan to use 2 additional speakers for Zone 2. Only cons I've seen so far are_ * boxy older design * does not support use of banana plugs * not many mounting options Pros * 7.1 speaker set * superb sound quality * lightweight speakers * wooden body * Tallboys save money for front speaker stands Spkeares/subsfr are bit bigger but from all my research I believe when it comes to speakers "bigger the better". I really liked these speakers and would definitely recommend... so as Onkyo receiver 608.

Great Deal, Fantastic Speakers!
One of the main reasons i purchased this set is because it has the tall front L & R speakers, has great reviews on Amazon and CNet. Really great sound quality for the price. This is connected to my Onkyo TX-SR505 Receiver that i purchased about 4-5 years ago and set at 120Hz. I've actually set this up as 5.1 surround in a 20x25 room with TV, PS3, iPod and turntable and have connected the 2 remaining speakers in a different room as speaker set B (front L & R) on my receiver to pipe music/sound to my other entertainment room. Having it only setup as a 5.1 in a large room, i must say, the sound quality is impressive. Surround is fantastic, bass is powerful, low and crisp (Not muffled or distorted) and rocks the house pretty well. Front left right and center speakers are very crisp and hi's and mid's are very sharp (I also diverted all my bass to the front L & R speakers just to see how it would handle, which they did with ease while listening to some bass intensive rock from my turntable). Call of Duty: Black Ops on PS3 w/ surround is stunning, I'm positive my neighborhood feels each gunshot, bass rocks. Great Speaker set for the price. Update 1/9/13 I thought I would update this because I usually like to research quality over a period of time when I purchase something. These speakers are used several hours daily for TV, blue ray, PS3 gaming, and/or music via iPod or record player and often at high levels. They are still producing extremely high quality sound and continue to be impressed by the quality especially during football games, high intensity blue ray movies and gaming (Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 being the latest). The only "complaint" i have is that the rear surround speakers I used for speaker B in my other room have a less than stellar sound at higher volumes, and max out easily. I am not sure if this is because they are not truly meant to be a front left and right stereo speaker or if it is my receiver. At some point i plan to purchase a set of small bookshelf speakers for the other room and turn my main room w/ tv into a full 7.1 system. i will update again at that point. Still 5 stars!

Great sound with my Onkyo HT-RC360 Receiver. Great Price.
Based on all of the positive reviews, I paired this 7.1 speaker system with my Onkyo HT-RC360 7.2-Channel Network Audio/Video Receiver (Black) in my gaming and TV area. I am quite pleased with the sound and the appearance of the system. My receiver supplies 100 watts per channel into 6 ohms for these speakers. The result is a clear and balanced sound for a very attractive price. SETUP Hooking the speakers up was extremely easy with my Onkyo receiver. Each speaker is clearly labeled as to room placement and the wires supplied with the speakers are color coded for the correct receiver connection - six different color wires match six different color receiver speaker connections. It was nice to be able to run all of the wires without stopping to label anything. The only thing that needs assembly for any of the speakers is attaching the weighted footing for the front side speakers. LISTENING EXPERIENCE After I set the speakers up and calibrated them for the room with the receivers Audyssey 2EQ, I threw on "The Hurt Locker" to get a good combination of dialogue, explosions, gun fire, helicopters, things driving by etc. The system performed excellently. Nothing was too loud and voices could always be understood - even in the action scenes. There was ample volume. In fact, I can't imagine turning things all of the way up on this system as it would be uncomfortably loud. BOTTOM LINE Straight music playback was solid for a 7.1 system. Obviously, these speakers pale in comparison to my Klipsch for music reproduction but they are a fraction on the cost and geared for surround sound. When I really want to rock out, I use zone two on the receiver to connect to another amp that drives the big speakers for music. Maybe I'm old school, but for music alone I prefer quality stereo speakers. However, for movies and games, these speakers can't be beat in this price range.

Very good speakers for the price
I purchased these speakers last winter (December 2011) and have them connected to my Onkyo amplifier that I purchased around the same time. I try to only review items after I've had some time to use them. The Onkyo speakers came in one gigantic box. It was well packed and nothing was damaged. All of the pieces were there and it was easy to assemble the bases to the tall boy speakers. All of the speakers have wooden composition sides, fronts and backs and have nice faux woodgrain matte black finish. The tall boys have glossy plastic tops. The center has glossy sides. The satellite speakers have hangers on the back (which I did not use) The subwoofer is fairly substantial both in size and weight. I mounted the satellite speakers using ceiling mounts I purchased from Amazon. I will try to find them again to provide a review for those as well. The tall boys are great as I didn't need to source any speaker stands for them. Unlike some speakers, these tall boys actually use the entire wood structure as the sound box. Sound from these speakers is better than I was expecting and I'm very pleased with the price to performance of this purchase. Bass can be felt and heard but it is well balanced with the other speakers. The satellite speakers are respectable and do their job of filling the soundstage well enough. The tall boys and center channel speaker have three drivers in each and represent people speaking as well as music very well. I've got this 7.1 package configured with Audyssey DSX through an Onkyo amplifier. Definitely highly recommended (for this price range).

Good quality/build plus some extras add up to great value
I am happy with this speaker set because, in my view, I got a lot of value for what I paid. I wouldn't call myself an Onkyo fan when it comes to entertainment devices - Sony receiver, Sony PS3, Sony BD player, Samsung TV - but I am aware of Onkyo's reputation for quality and this set of speakers doesn't disappoint. All prospective buyers should be aware that these are 6 Ohm (SIX OHM) speakers. They will work well with 6 Ohm receivers, of course, and you SHOULD be able to use them with an 8 Ohm receiver if it's kept in a well-ventilated shelf and you don't keep it continuously at full blast. My own receiver is 8 Ohm and it seems to be Okay but both Onkyo and the receiver maker may not want to honor the warranty if they get word of this. CONTENTS What you get is good quality, 130W speakers encased in well-built wood boxes, a 290W powered woofer and then, there are a couple of unexpected bonuses. - 1 Center speaker, surprisingly large - 2 Front speakers on 'tower' stands (tallboy) - will save you money on speaker stands but if you're thinking about hanging them, this is not your set. - 4 Satellite speakers - do have hanging holes - 1 Woofer - powered, connects through 'banana' jacks on both ends - Color-coded wires for each speaker - kind of thin and I used my own, see below but... they're free - Onkyo UP-A1 Dock for the iPod - this was totally unexpected SETUP A screwdriver will be needed to attach the heavy metal base to the front, floor-standing speakers. If you go with the color-coded wires, connecting everything is easy. I decided that I wanted thicker, copper speaker wire so I went with ACOUSTIC RESEARCH AP-16100W 100' White 16 Gauge Oxygen-Free Speaker Wire and I'm happy I did that. The 100 ft. spool was about 25 ft. short of what I needed so, until I get another 25 ft., one of my satellite speakers will be using the Onkyo-supplied wire so I'm happy they included these. The center and satellite speakers have mounting holes in the back but not on the base. I like my center speaker to sit on top of the TV and that was accomplished with about 1 ft. of Velcro 2"-wide tape. I used Velcro on the 4 stands as well as, in my view, it preserves the speaker's integrity and it even offers some cushioning. I do not own an iPod or an Onkyo receiver so the iPod Dock I am trying to sell at Amazon. Hopefully, there will be a buyer and that should help reduce the overall cost of this set. THE EXPERIENCE I only have good things to say about this set. For what I paid, it fully meets my expectation. The sound is full, crisp and if there are any distortions my ear is not trained or sensitive enough to detect them. Physically, the boxes look professionally built and designed, uncompromising black matte with the sides of the center, the top of the front speakers and the woofer's front a perfect shiny polish - don't touch them or the fingerprints could be seen from a distance. The tall front pair is stable even on my carpeted floor. RATING This set deserves its 5 stars well for delivering good quality, well-built speakers and the couple of extras - wires, iPod dock. Highly recommended for anyone looking for a 7.1 set of 6 Ohm speakers.

Great, but DO NOT count on an I-Pod Dock
This is tough. Lets do the good. Sounds awesome! Looks good, easy to setup. For the money I really dare to find competition. Playing video with DTS Audio is amazing with my onkyo receiver and this speaker package. Comes with color coded wire but is a little low in gauge if you ask me. All in all, the Product is really sharp, well designed, attractive but neutral and not overkill. To the bad. As stated in another review Onkyo states in the manual shipped with mine there is an I-Pod dock included and was also described here on amazon as included. I tore the cardboard and foam apart looking for it and thought I must be the unlucky guy. No the case. For whatever reason they stopped shipping with the dock. Onkyo made no mention of this, and denies it even ever came with one!! The support and response I got was appalling. I was treated like an idiot and as if I was wasting their time. I along with other Amazon customers have proof of false advertising and hope to get this resolved. Bottom Line. Product=Great Company=Awful I will NEVER buy another Onkyo product in my life. The only saving grace you might have is if you buy from Amazon you can always rely on Amazon to correct or make of for Onkyo's blatant short comings. They simply do not care about you the customer, and whats more is they seem to make that very clear to you. I am honestly offended by there practices. Good luck.

Phenomenal!
I've had numerous 5.1 sound setups, but none that sounded this good. Phenomenal audio quality. And with the extra two speakers for the full 7.1 system, the experience is even better. Base can shake the house if you want it to. Well worth the price!
