All the inhabitants of Robben Island are free, but the struggle for cultural identity after the fall of apartheid continues. When the Lighthouse Keeper dies, he leaves behind an adopted daughter with no experience of life beyond the island. Two weeks later she is notified that her biological father died on the same day. She is secret love child of Deisch van der Bijl and his farm employee, Rachel Dorha, who died at childbirth. Charlie has now inherited a wine farm in the valley of Hemel en Aarde, but she has no plans to leave her beloved home to claim her inheritance in the Land of the Faraway. The solicitor however, convinces her to take her responsibilities seriously; to visit the farm before she makes a final decision to forego ownership. She asks the solicitor to keep her identity and the contents of the Will secret as a twist of fate gives her the opportunity to get to the know the people and the farm, not as the owner, but as the new maid to her cousin who has assumed ownership as his uncle's next of kin. This is a story full of symbolism.
