Philip Glass: The Complete Piano Etudes - Piano Classics Sheet Music - Piano Chord Book - Philip Glass Piano Works

Enjoyable to play, except...
My main complaint relates to the style of binding used for this volume of etudes. The book does not easily stay flat open on the piano music stand, which makes fast page turns difficult.

Great Pieces of Music
The book's print is very sharp which is necessary for these sorts of scores. What else is to say except the music is astounding, making this an astounding book to own. A must for Glass lovers.

I Love You Philip Glass
BEFORE I discovered Philip Glass and this glorious book of etudes, I'd played piano very casually for 10 years or so (never played consistently and never took lessons). I was in band and always had a strong interest in music, so I was pretty good at picking out melodies by ear and playing simple chords underneath. The problem was that any time I tried to sit down and learn a piece of notated music, I'd just get overwhelmed by all the different moving parts and give up. Always had this feeling that the bar of entry into classical piano literature was too high, like I'd missed out on years of requisite fundamentals so it was pointless to try. Needless to say, I hardly improved over those years.SINCE discovering Philip Glass and this glorious book of etudes, I'm playing piano for literal hours every day just for the joy of it. I feel myself actually developing those techniques I previously thought I'd missed out on. I've honestly fallen in love with the piano. The music itself is sprawling and always interesting, and clearly the work of a genius. What I'd like to highlight is how USER-FRIENDLY these compositions are. Every note is placed in a way that feels comfortable and intuitive. This makes it easy to memorize these pieces and go into a sort of trance as you notice all these details in the harmony that aren't apparent on early listens. It is so incredibly satisfying to play these etudes, and people love to hear them. If you are even slightly decent at piano and want something to push you forward, GET THIS COLLECTION. If you are an advanced pianist, STILL GET THIS COLLECTION because it's full of incredible music that would fit into any repertoire. Some of my personal favorites to play: 2, 5, 9, 10, 14, 17I'll also add: this book is constructed immaculately. Huge pages, intuitively printed to avoid awkward turns, it actually sits flat no matter what pages are opened. This was clearly designed with respect for the consumer.

Beautiful music for intermediate and advanced pianists
The music is beautiful, and the book is very well printed and high quality. The notation is large, easy to read, and very intuitive. The repetitive nature of Glass's work makes it easy to slip into somewhat of a trance when playing this music, and it's hard to articulate ust how enjoyable these pieces are to play. On a few occasions I've spent multiple hours playing the same sequences of broken chords Glass is known for, and didn't even realize it.That being said, note that these are somewhat difficult despite their repetition. The tempo is fast on many pieces, and there are technical challenges to overcome. They definitely have pedagogical value - expect to be challenged on your arpeggios, polyrhythms, octaves, and jumps. I'll admit that some of the pieces here are above my level (intermediate) personally, but I look forward to coming back to them over the years to come.

Eerie but expected?
I’ve heard this music often in the soundtrack of films. It’s not hard to play. Mysterious in an organized (?) way.

All the etudes
Visual size is good. Jut be aware there are no pedal markings. The book is sturdy and bound well.

Outstanding music for today
I especially liked the clear layout of the music on the page. It is easy to read.

Accessible to an intermediate player, with some modifications
I bought this music for my tween-age daughter. She loves Philip Glass and was willing to take on the challenge of trying these pieces. She's intermediate level with about 5 years of lessons. Her hands are too small to play some of the chords, so she got really discouraged at first. But she's made modifications, both on her own and with the help of her piano teacher, based on what she can physically do. No, she isn't playing the pieces exactly as written, but they sound pretty close to the recorded versions. Most importantly, she's still learning from these beautiful pieces, within her ability. It's really building her confidence! I'm sure she will continue to try (and master) more and more of these Etudes as she progresses.

Very Interesting Compositions
Heard the 6th etude in Yuja Wang's concert, and loved it. Bought the entire book, and the pieces are good as sight-reading exercises.

I love it
Played the first ten Etudes completely and had great fun with it. The last ten Etudes don't challenge me at all. May be one day.

For those who want to do more than listen ...
I listened to his etudes on YouTube, and decided I had to learn to play some of them. Delighted to find them all together in one book. Some are much easier than others, suitable for intermediate player level upwards. I've started on the simplest and there are plenty to challenge me over the years. My hands are learning new skills, my brain new rhythms. I'll never be a Maki Namekawa, and I may never be able to play them all, but it matters not - I'm having great fun getting my fingers round the ones I've tried. Very glad that he has released the book.I expect the book to last well, to last my lifetime.
