Q: does this leave a coarse or semi-smooth surface, and is it suitable for harsh winter conditions in Chicago when applied to a painted concrete sidewalk

I used it to mix into floor varnish for wood steps in the interior of my boat. It worked just fine for me, an almost invisible, slightly rough surface for the steps. I doubt if this is the right product for exterior concrete sidewalks or steps although the principle is the same. In the past I have mixed coarse sand with concrete paint to get a traction surface on floors. Another method I have used is to simply paint as usual with your preferred paint and than apply sand or some other aggregate to the wet surface with a "Johnny Appleseed" seed spreader. Works pretty good and the seed spreader provides a very even coat!

Q: Would this be ok for hardwood stairs ?

Yes, I would say it would give you non slip stairs.

Q: Has anyone tried this on skateboards or longboards in place of grip tape?

Applied multiple times (to build up texture like grip tape) with epoxy (to keep the texture beads bonded to the wood) and it should work, however we have not tested the longevity of it staying on your board. Therefore, we cannot recommend it.
