Alen 45i Air Purifier, Quiet Air Flow for Large Rooms, 800 SqFt, Air Cleaner for Allergens, Dust, Mold, Pet Odors with Long Filter Life

Based on a favorable review in Consumer Reports I purchased a Blueair 211+. I have returned that unit, and replaced it with an Alen Breathesmart 45i, so this review will be a comparison of the two. Both are approved by the state of California as not producing harmful levels of ozone, sometimes a side-effect of ion generation. Both units have ion generation, but on the Alen you can turn it on or off. I found the Blueair caused increasing eye irritation over several days, which I have not experienced with the Alen ion generator turned off. While the Alen is a bit more expensive (depending on the confusing filter choices on the Blueair), it also has a greater square footage capability. If you like the Alen features, you can get most of them at a lower cost in the Breathesmart Flex. Here is what I prefer in the Alen 45i. As mentioned, you can turn the ion generator on or off. It has a five color indicator for real time air particulate level, which I have seen change when I clean up a dusty room or empty a document shredder into a waste container. You can set the fan speed to auto, which will change the speed based on the detected air quality. It has a TrueHEPA filter rated at H13. This compares to the HEPAsilent terminology of the Blueair, which you can find criticism of online and which I noticed you can see through when I returned the unit. The Alen has multiple, easy to use lighted controls, and you can turn the light level up, down or off. If this review sounds like a am an Alen salesman, I am not -- just a retired consumer with no involvement ever in the industry. As to the Consumer Reports ratings, the Blueair is recommended as is the Alen Breathesmart Classic (which is larger and older than the Alen 45i). They did not test the newer Alen 45i. In real world use, I find a slam dunk favorite in the Alen Breathesmart 45i compared to the Blueair 211+, both in results and its' much greater user friendliness and flexibility to control.

I live about 2 miles from the beach and get a lot of dust and pollutants thru bedroom window because I need it open to cool the room in the summer. With this air cleaner running manual setting level 2 (of4) we find we sleep much better. This air cleaner has an app which I use on the iPhone. Only function it does not do is turn the control panel lights on / off. The app allows you to customize schedules and manipulate all other controls (power, mode, fan level) and see air quality. My room gets so dusty I have to vacuum the outer filter of dust every few days. The other day we had a skunk smell come in but the smell was gone with minutes! Very nice air cleaner.

I’ve had a lot of air purifiers through the years and this one is far superior than any I’ve ever purchased. Not only is it sleek looking but it is quiet so I can sleep. The lights on the air purifier is not obnoxiously bright like some. I wish I would have purchased this years before!

So...I did A LOT of research before buying and I think I could have saved a lot of money by purchasing a different air purifier. What sold me on this unit was being able to purchase different filters and the lifetime warranty, BUT turns out you only get the lifetime warranty if you sign up for a filter subscription. So if I could do this over, I would just buy a different air purifier with one really good filter.

It's only been 2 weeks but I immediately stopped coughing at night from the pollin, dust, etc. My husband was concerned it would be loud as he's a light sleeper but it's very quiet. I'm definitely buying another for my family room.

Works perfectly for our large Sunroom. Ordering another for our Master Bedroom. Low sound even on Turbo. We keep it on high (one step below Turbo), it has an auto fan speed that will adjust on it's own but we like the air turnover. Definite difference noticeable.

We decided to purchase an air purifier thinking it might help with allergies and overall wellness. It has worked well so far. We just started using it a few weeks ago and my husband hardly snores now! That's a plus for sure. It is super quiet too and is easy to move from room to room.

If you are looking for something to handle smoke… Works Awesome, within 30 mins and really much less than that. Highly recommended- super pun intended
