Fowler's Dictionary of Modern English Usage 4th Edition

This is the updated version of the classic volume on the usage of modern English. It is thorough and thoughtful and provides users with options for expressing words, phrases, sentences, and paragraphs. Well worth having as a source for usage but also fun to read when there’s time available for such luxury.

My current copy is the 1987 2nd edition. This will be on my book shelf next to the 2nd edition and other wordsmith books.

Always has been fascinating to read and reference. Still excellent.

This dictionary is one which tells you the epistemology of words and not necessarily the meaning. Don’t buy if your looking for a dictionary with definitions. But. This was an awesome purchase anyways

this is a great addition to a dictionary. It gives ways in which a word should (or should not) be used, origins, and other words it is often confused with. I have found that this is an excellent book when trying to explain subtleties in the English language. This is not, however, a grammar book. If that's what you are looking for, I would recommend something else

Subtle, detailed, and full of thoughtful common sense, Butterfield's updating of Fowler is a joy for those who pay attention to usage, or those who would like to pay more attention.
