46lb NV Series Trolling Motor by Newport

I have this on a twelve-foot Lowe's Jon boat. This is my impression after one use - not anything long term. The motor pushed me very easily against the current of the St Johns river, which flows about 3-4 MPH. It has multiple speeds for forward and reverse. I used it on the transom for the one trip. It is a 12V unit, so one deep cycle battery is all that's needed. The motor has a LED readout on the top to monitor the level of the battery. It's useful to see where the battery status is for obvious reasons, but also for keeping the battery healthy by not discharging it too much. The wiring has an inline circuit breaker on the positive lead that can be reset if tripped. The wiring is a little too short in my opinion and should have eyelet ends, not the split/fork style ends. I can fix that by installing extra wire with the right sized battery terminal clamps. My goal is to turn the top/head unit around and use the motor on the bow/front of the Jon boat. I have not done that yet but I have inspected the head and it looks exactly like the one in the Youtube video where the person turned the head around. Why? Because I want bow mount performance at transom mount cost - if that makes sense. The bow mount motors are higher cost due to more hardware, controls, etc. At this price point I have plenty of power where I want it. I would recommend this unit based on my experience so far.

We live on a lake in the UP of Michigan. We don't fish. We don't like the noisy motors of our neighbors. I'm no youngster and wouldn't care for the inconvenience of lugging a heavy gas motor down and back up the steps to the lake, or removing said motor when I need to take the boat out of the water. Rowing is a good alternative, but it's a struggle when hauling or towing materials to our island that are too heavy or bulky for our kayaks. So, we decided to sell our classic 10 hp Johnson that we bought with the boat from the previous owner of our home (and which we never used), and I bought this trolling motor. In my mind it's a good solution. It won't get you from A to B very fast, but it gets you there, and quietly. It has a bunch of speeds, and seems to be a modest user of the current from the battery. It's lightweight and seems to be sturdily built. The only thing I don't like is that it struggles when I have to go through some water lillies--maybe not quite enough torque. But the propeller cleans off easily. All in all, I'm very happy with the motor after using it for a month. We'll see how it holds up over time.

Good trolling motor. More power than I needed and have yet to go above 3. I use this on my 14.6 canoe. If it’s a windy day on the pound you’ll be glad you went with it. In the video it’s only at a two power

I ordered the 46 lb thrust motor. It arrived well packaged and on time. The motor seems to be pretty well made. I'm used to the 'other' popular brand. When that motor died after 10 yrs I ordered this one. Less expensive but decent reviews so I gave it a shot. So far, just a few hours on it and it's doing well. Quiet and holding up. One thing I did notice though is that this motor, 46 lb. garners about the same amount of thrust as my previous 35 lb thrust motor. Not really a problem as it costs less than the other companies smaller one, it's just not something that I anticipated. I can tell as I have a very accurate GPS on my boat that tells me the speed. I'm not sure if it's the motor or maybe the three blade propeller compared to the two blades on the other motors. That being said. So far so good. I'm satisfied with the build quality, performance, and functionality for the cost. If things should change I'll be back with an update.

5 Stars for the first run. I'll adjust if necessary, but so far, here's the review: GREAT bang for the buck. I've owned & been very satisfied with my Minn Kota's (30 & 35lb), but decided to try the NV 46lb for LESS money than a new 40lb MK. I'm pushing a 15.6' Coleman Journey canoe with myself, my son & all our fishing gear, so I figure over 500lbs total. 5 forward speeds ~ 1 is perfect for positioning, 2-3 is great for trolling, 4 moves you right along & 5.....when you hit 5, the canoe SURGES. It really gets you to when you're going. I forgot to turn on my GeoTracker so I could see an actual speed, but I was definitely impressed. Reverse speeds: Unlikely you'll ever need for than #1, but #3 backs you out in a hurry! Battery consumption: We were on the water for 2.5hrs & were moving up & down the shoreline. Light wind, gusty at times, so a lot of positioning. 2 good long runs at full speed, estimate total distance of about 2 miles. Size 29DC EverStart battery was still at 75% when we finished up. The mount itself is nylon & has a composite shaft. Seems to be of good quality. The 3 blade prop really digs in well. This model was a 30" shaft & I almost wish I'd gotten a 36" shaft model. When mounted on the canoe, dropped (almost) all the way down, it seems that it's just barely down far enough. It's clearly well below the bottom of the boat, but it felt as if it would bite more if it were down another few inches. Certainly not a complaint, just an observation. The motor itself is HEAVY, but I suppose that's normal for a larger saltwater motor. I'll only be using it in freshwater, so I suspect it'll last quite a while. The only gripe I have is that the cables are short - less than 4'. In order to place the battery where I want it, I'll have to splice another several feet of cable. Again, not a complaint, but I was expecting the cables to be about 6'. Liked the telescoping handle, though I may rig some sort of aftermarket handle to extend it even further.

Much cheaper than MinnKota and does a good job

I bought this for my Intex Excursion 5 person raft (plus the motor mount) and it works great! I use a 79Ah marine battery to power it, and it ran it for a couple hours on the river, it barely dropped the voltage 1/2 volt. The manual claims that it will go almost 6mph at full speed, and I think that's accurate, definitely meets my expectations. My only complaint: The circuit breaker looks like a last-minute addition that wasn't well suited to this application. It has to be hooked up to the positive wire in an awkward way, and is just long enough to hit the negative battery terminal by accident, which is very bad. I read the instructions and the breaker was not explained. So far it's tripped 1 time per outing, for no particular reason. When it trips a little button pops out on the side, and you need to push it back in.

I haven't owned this for too long, so if it breaks on me, I'll revise my review, but so far I love this motor. Especially so after having a stinky, noisy two stroke that was way too heavy to hoist off a dinghy onto the motor mount of my sailboat. This little motor is quiet and definitely has enough thrust to get you around most harbors. You can run for hours on a mighty max battery. If you put the leads in backwards ( I did once) it runs in reverse polarity (reverse speeds become forward, and vice-versa). The installation of the propeller blades is pretty easy. I only have one think one thing could be improved, which is the difference in speed between speeds 4 and 5. 5 is almost twice as much thrust as 4. I wish they were spaced more evenly, although speed 5 gets you through wind waves and currents.

Buen motor solo que yo esperaba mas velocidad en el kayak pero aparte de que mi kayak es muy pesado, el motor funcionó muy birn, el problema que tuve, fue que en 3 horas se me bajó la carga de la batería por ir siempre a máxima velocidad, fubciona6muy bien en reversa y para adelante. Quiza lo cambie por un 2.5 de 2 tiempos de combustión interna, necesito mas velocidad para poder trolear.

This motor works great on my sportsman 120 fishing kayak. Going into the wind I held a steady 5 km/h. I run it off of a lifep04 100ah battery and after 3 plus hours going max speed almost constantly I barely used 25% of the battery. I do wish it had a 36 inch shaft to ease raising it from my seat having more sticking up past the pivot, but all in all I am pretty happy with this purchase and if you have a similar use planned, I would highly recomend. I cannot speak to the hand control or battery life indicator because I removed the head and made a variable speed pwm conttol box. Motor has a slight hum, which I assume is normal but this is my first trolling motor. I think it is quiet though, I can motor around on a peaceful morning and the slight hum doesn't disturb my peace one bit.

Lo he usado solo una vez, pero estoy contenta, es lento, pero creo que olvidamos que son motores de troleo. Pero mueve la lancha, en mi caso mariner 4, con 3 adultos a bordo, lo suficiente para que sea algo divertido
