As the final touch on a fancy front-porch railing, I inserted about 150 of these buttons into holes instead of using filler. It was important that the “stumps” were the same diameter and depth and that the tops all had the exact same shape. These were great. I think I threw away just two or three during the process. I was very pleased. As you can see from the photo, I prime and paint all of my boards before I build anything because I hate to paint. I could not figure out how to pre-paint the buttons so they are waiting for a coat as I touch up the boards.

These do exactly what they are supposed to do. Plug holes and make them look nice. They go by various names. Wood plugs, hole plugs, button plugs. Do not, and I can't stress this enough, call them "butt plugs." That's an entirely different section of Amazon and will lead to a lengthy, and red-faced, explanation to your spouse. But they're great for woodworking.

I have no idea what is going on with math these days but this is the third supplier we tried before we got a 3/8 plug. They are true and uniform.
