Great book.
Coming from someone who eased their way through the first book, I'll tell you that you should complete that one before doing this one if you are new to the piano like I was a few months back. But if you have some experience behind the piano and have been playing for a little while, you can pick up right here. It picks up right where book 1 left off at and continues. It has some great pieces in here that are easy to understand, but at the same time challenge you at some points that is saying that you are an intermediate like me. And most importantly, it does a good job instructing you on how to play through out the book. When I first started in book 1, I needed a teacher to help guide me but after 50 pages or so I was very capable of handling it on my own the rest of the way and that continues in book 2 so yes, you can sort of guide yourself throughout the journey.

Excellent piano method for adults (and probably children, too)
I am nearing the end of Alfred's All-in-one Book 1, so have only browsed this book. But, I can comment on what I like about the methodology and the books: 1. The progression of theory, exercises, and performance materials is very well thought out. When Palmer says this exercise should be practiced daily, do it. It really helps improve your technical skills. 2. The quality of the construction is high - big easy to read notes and spiral bound so the book lays flat on the piano music stand. 3. The songs are interesting and varied, introducing different genres of music. The only slight drawback is there is ample opportunity to improvise on a number of the songs and try your hand at composing, but Palmer does not point this out. It is definitely worth doing, really reinforcing a thorough understanding of chords, keys, chord inversions, and other concepts introduced in the text.

I bought all 3 levels of this course book for my husband and he has had a great time teaching himself piano for fun. I recommend it. Very easy to pick up and start at any level.

Easy to follow along
This book was recommended to me by my piano instructor. For 5 weeks, my instructor took me through each song of the first book one by one. Unfortunately for my instructor, this book was so good, I found I had little use for an instructor at $40 an hour when all he did was take me through a self-help book. Anyway, I found the book excellent as well as level 1. The only reason why I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 was becuase the book doesn't focus much on learning to read music. For the songs I mastered near the end the book, I ended up memorizing the songs. At best I can translate music (using the E-G-B-D-F) method taught to me by my grade school music teacher, but I can't really read music on sight. My son can read music better than I and he's only 12.

GOOD!
35 years ago, as a child, I learned basics of a Russian accordion("Bayan") . Today I'm 43 y.o. But I always dreamed about piano. With Alfred's course it is kind of dream that comes true! I completed book One in 9 months and now I'm in the middle of book Two. It is really cool...Particularly after russian school it is very fresh approach. Less formal, more enjoyable music. Really great feeling while learning. Important to go through every exercise(piece), in every one there is a little bit to learn. I also have a Hanon's "fingers aerobic" as an additional important component in 20% of lessons, but mostly I use just Alfred's book. I like this book very much. It is a fully charged course with great attention to details.

Entertaining, solid foundational book
I've been using these books for years, and I try other lines and always come back to the Alfred All-in-Ones for adults. The songs are pretty good, nothing too odd or boring, decent foundation to build upon, though I always add in chords/scales separately because I don't feel they do enough. It moves a pretty fast pace, though, so I wouldn't start someone who had never touched a piano in this book. I'd chose an even simpler beginner book and then go on to this one. I've tried Bastien's adult line and Piano Adventure's adult line, and the songs nor the order they teach things in is as good.

A great series for the adult learner
As a senior learning to play piano in my sixties, after completing book 1, it's been a pleasure working my way through book 2. Some really enjoyable tunes and love that the arrangements are a bit more involved. Even though I'm now on book 3, I keep going back to this one simply because of several of my favourite tunes. This series can be completed by someone trying to learn on their own but, as I have been, working along with my piano teacher.
