Great value so far. Read info on how this works out.
Great motor for less than half the cost of the leading brand. Saw prior review about water intrusion into the motor housing. So I took mine apart straight out of the box. Sure enough the wiring goes down the shaft and right to the motor. (See pictures). I used a tiny burst of Daptex low expansion foam sealant. Problem solved. Two ways this could happen: 1-Motor falls off your transom into the water and the power cords keep it attached. You pull it out and water would have gotten down into the shaft to the electric motor—ruining it. 2–water spray from a transducer gets into the head of the motor and enough comes in that the little drain holes in the base can’t drain fast enough and bam—motor ruined. Also I’d worry about salt spray getting down there—that’s why I took it apart and sealed it up. Don’t leave this motor outdoors—even with it sealed up, it’s not that waterproofed. The battery tester led’s appear safe from most water sources, but I’m betting dampness will get into the upper head of this motor and ruin it eventually. Time will tell. My advice is of course wash with clean water and store it in a dry (not even damp) location. But this isn’t a Minnkota and I didn’t expect it to be at this price! It’s less than half the cost of a MK riptide for salt water. If you need a motor to last 10 years of heavy use then go that route. I’m starting with an inflatable dinghy in a tidal lagoon for my first saltwater vessel. Went very cheap on the boat and the motor. I’m hooking this up to a very high quality AGM deep cycle marine battery. Goal is to just to not have to use the oars! The trim mechanism is very well engineered except for one more fault—the transom mount bolts stop about an inch and a quarter too short!!! With a 1” or smaller plywood transom now I have to “beef” that up so the motor will stay on. Stupid design there—this company’s smallest shaft motor and it’s designed to fit a 17.5 foot fiberglass boat not a small jonboat or dingy. This is not a big confidence boost I’m feeling for the company right now. (See pic). At any rate if your boat has a wide transom no modification will be needed. Comes with an in-line circuit breaker which is nice—though you better keep the salt off of it as well, it’s ferromagnetic so it’s going to rust.... Also the motor is definitely louder than my Minnkota freshwater trolling motors (I’ve two that have lasted 11 yrs). But, again, right now I’m just trying out the saltwater on the cheap. I will upgrade later if things work out. I’m giving it 4 stars for now based on the value. I got exactly what I’d expect at this price point. If it fails in any way I’ll update this post. I figure I’ll get at least 5 years out of this as I only fish saltwater when I’m on vacation. If you’re starting out on the cheap and are just seeing how things go, this is the motor for you. My next saltwater trolling motor will be a Minnkota riptide if this thing even stutters just once. Usually I plan to do it right the first time, but as I’m just getting my toes wet here I’m going on the cheap to see how I like it. I would never buy this thing for daily or even monthly use. Don’t trust the brand yet. If you fish a lot in saltwater, or stealth is super important to you I’d warn against this purchase. Also one more word of caution: almost all states will require boat registration if ANY type of motor is used, including electric only. So check the refs where you fish—I’ll bet you you have to fully register your vessel even if it’s a kayak as soon as you strap a motor onto it.

Runs Smooth and Quiet With Plenty of Power
I have been using this motor on my Sea Eagle 385fta Fast Track Angler inflatable kayak for over a year now. It is powered by a Dakota LiPo 54A battery. With this combo, I can cruise of and on at medium speed all day for two whole days without running out of power. The Newport motor is a couple pounds heavier than what is recommended by Sea Eagle but the battery weighs a fraction of what a standard marine battery weighs so that more than makes up for the motor being 2-3 pounds over the recommended weight. The one thing I would change on the design is are the clamp faces. The metal is very durable but it is also too smooth. It needs to have a better grip on the surface that contacts the transom. this is especially true if you use the Sea Eagle side mount transom with it's heavy duty vinyl vertical plank. On more than one occasion after tightening the hand knobs as far as possible, the round discs on the opposite side of the clamps would slide out of place during a moderate turn. Had I not been paying close attention, the entire motor could have fallen off and been lost in the bottom of the lake or maybe even capsized me like a giant anchor. I have since remedied this issue by adding a thin layer of inner tube rubber on both sided of the transom which greatly improves the clamps' grip. It would also be good if the throttle handle extension had more resistance when it was extended or contracted. As it is designed, it slides in and out with just the bare minimum pressure, even if unintentional. This was also corrected (at least temporarily) with some clever use of thread tape but it required some disassembly which very well might have voided the warranty. Even with these relatively minor issues, the Newport Kayak motor had been a solid performer and I expect to get many more years of use out of it.

Fantastic but too fast for trolling
If you’ve decided you’re buying a trolling motor for your kayak, you can stop looking, this can’t be beat with anything in its price range. Don’t be hard headed like me and go ahead and get some decent outriggers too, the two can make a kayak like a mini bass or skiff boat and can open up wind/wave limits and distances that were unsafe before. I may have had equally good customer service from another company but certainly not better! I had some vibration first time out, emailed them while not sure if it was motor or mount they replied in a few hours and then overnighted me a new prop, hardware and pins. Less than 24hours ownership and parts were shipped. Turned out pin got bent somehow but it’s pretty smooth now. I’m using a $90 lead acid 100ah battery, run it mostly on speed 4, inshore of Gulf of Mexico, stopping to fish occasionally, with 10mph+ winds, 1-2’ waves, I’ll use 5 if I need to maneuver quicker, and I get over 6 miles before the 4th light starts to flash which I treat as my “head back” indicator. I’m sure I could get 7 if needed and maybe up to 8 in smooth calm lake conditions. The battery indicators are bright enough to see in the sun but maybe a touch bright at night. They can’t be turned off but nothing a little piece of tape won’t fix. The wind gets rough here and sometimes I wish I got the 44lb vs 36 but ultimately the weight savings was worth it for me and this is fine. It gives my pelican catch 100 top speed of 3.5mph while average cruise in 4th gear is 3mph. Sit back, relax and enjoy the view, you’re not getting there quick. My one complaint, with my kayak anyway, speed one is just a touch too fast so when I cast a paddle tail in front of me while in 1st, I can’t reel it in fast enough to keep it swimming which totally ruins the action of the lure. If I try to troll behind me with 3/16oz 4/0 weighted hook it just breaks the surface. That’s a bit of a let down for me but I have a pretty light kayak so it may not be a common experience. I’ve only had it out a hand full of times so I’m sure I’ll learn the trick eventually. I was frequently limited by conditions I wasn’t comfortable in but this and yak gear outriggers mean I can safely and comfortable go out on rougher days and cover lots of ground which give me even more stress relief! Weekly trips vs closely monitoring conditions.

Excellent on Kevlar canoe
After using this motor on a fishing canoe for several years in salt water I am very satisfied with the weight and thrust. It’s light enough for mounting at the end of the canoe, and it drives the canoe at a good clip without using a lot of power. A canoe or small Jon boat are ideal for shallow water, IF you don’t have to paddle or row them a long ways, at least at my advancing age. In very shallow water tilt the motor up and paddle as usual. Note that the battery cables are fairly short, so also getting extension cables is advised so both you and the battery are not at the back of the boat, which can tilt the front up. This was a fairly low cost motor but the performance and quality have been excellent. Wandering all over the salt marshes for crab and oysters is not an arduous workout now that we have this motor to assist.

Very impressed with this motor! I made a good purchase!
First i want to say: I did a lot of research before buying this motor. I've owned two minn kota's in the past and they are good, but I needed another motor for my Jon boat (we call her Billy Angler). Upon Opening The Box: I was pleasantly surprised with the packaging quality; seemed heavy duty. There is a lot of plastic, but everything feels really solid. It's a good looking motor and when it's connected to a battery the LED lights shine a cool blue color. Was very impressed pulling the motor out of the box. After 5 Days of Fishing: Pros: - Size: The shaft is a great size for this smaller motor and fits my boat well. It's also really light weight. It's great for my smaller jon boat but may not have enough power for a large vessel. - Power: Way more power than expected. Gets my boat moving great. - Battery Life: I've run on high power for hours and it barely takes a dent on the battery life. Cons: - Reverse speed has big gaps in it. The 1st speed reverse isn't that fast and the 2nd speed is really fast. - Wasn't able to reverse the head direction. It would have been great to mount the motor on the front and back of my jon boat, but since I can't change the direction of the head and handle, I couldn't properly mount it on the front. Not a big issue; more of an observation. It works great for mounting on the back transom though.

Used on SunDolphin SunSlider.
I used this motor on my SunDolphin SunSlider paddle boat, as a substitute for peddling. i've used it once so far. My boats weight capacity is 545lbs. This 36ft lbs thrust motor propelled our little crew with ease. My wife, son and myself weigh 371 lbs combined, plus the weight of equipment. I truly enjoyed the little motor, it was super easy to install and works well. The motor itself is pretty lightweight. I will need to use it more to be able to comment on quality/durability. Many of the touch points are plastic which feels a bit cheap, but this is my first trolling motor so I don't know if this is normal. Considering the price point it's probably what you should expect. All in all I believe I got what I paid for and it does what I've asked of it. I would recommend. Kayak's, Canoe's, Small Dinghy's and Paddle Boats, I think its suitable for these applications.

So far so good after one season of use.
Nothing wrong with it. I use two 12 volt, 30 amp-hr lithium iron phosphate batteries wired in parallel. Total distance 12 km plus. I have zero complains.

EXCELENTE TROLEADOR
Me encantó, le doy una calificación de 10 de 10, buen material, indicador de carga, potente y seguro. Excelente avance y su reversa muy fuerte, a diferencia del Endura! Lo recomiendo porque esta marca se me hace superior a las demás.

Good thing for your money.
I do not use it often but after 3 years it still works like new, no issues. Moves my inflatable boat with 3 people just fine, speed around 5km/h (I can see it is about twice of speed of walking man), easy to install, easy to control, easy to adjust speed. Power consumption looks quite good. After an hour with 30Ah lithium battery it indicates full battery. I think, it is not correct as indicator is for lead-acid batteries but when I charge the battery, the charger indicates more than half of remained charge.
