My new go to product
My cuttings really like it. First I did a water propagation. Then added to soil. They're doing really well

Good dirt for succulents
Just transplanted many of my succulents using this dirt and have not lost any. 11 days later in decided to move one into another pot and was amazed how much roots had developed. The soil drains well but still allowing succulents to get just the right amount of water. I’ve been watering them every 4-5 days, but using very small amount of water per container. Love the quality and appearance of this cacti’s soil. Worth the investment.

Drains well; no gnat issues
I grow a lot of natives, so wanted a well-draining mix that had some sand or pumice, and pine bark, and no added "moisture retaining" or "wetting agents." I was happy to find that the version of this product that I received DID contain sand or pumice, and had the gritty, well-draining consistency I was seeking, but I notice on the listing and label that regionally formulated iterations may or may not contain sand or pumice, so I guess the mix one receives is dependent upon which processing plant made it (California, Georgia, etc.). I bought mine from Seller Amazon Services LLC. The package I received was nice and clean, and appeared to have been stored inside. I did not see any gnats when I opened my bag, and there was no evidence of mold or algae. I fear fungus gnats in any soil product that contains "worm castings" or "compost," so I did pour boiling water over my mix prior to use, just in case, even though I did not see any. As expected, this Cactus Mix drains well, but may be too heavy a soil for some species that prefer a lighter, fluffy mix. I bought mine when it was on sale (under $10), and thought it was a good value.

Cactus Mix great, cactus & succulent mix not so much!
So frustrating that I’ve purchased 3 bags of this on separate occasions. The first bag was the cactus mix, absolutely perfect. It’s gritty, airy, and doesn’t hold moisture in. The 2nd bag was the mix and I didn’t realize it until I transplanted a number of plants. I hate this mix. It’s absolutely moisture retaining. The 3rd bag which arrived today, was also a mix. The listing is for the cactus soil but the sellers will send you a mix so make sure you pay attention. The cactus soil is perfect, I repeat the cactus only soil is perfection.. but the cactus and succulent mix is trash. I’m sending the 3rd bag back, as there’s no way in hell I’m using it. There’s no way gnats can survive in this cactus soil bc it dries exceptionally well while giving the plants what they need. I just use a fertilizer or worm castings to feed, I don’t do any other amendments.

Full of fungus gnats!!!
Normally, I love this product. I used some of the soil on a snake plant, and put the remaining bag in a container. A week later, I open the container, and a great plenty of gnats were in the container. The soil used on the plant of course had eggs in it, because now my house is teeming with gnats. How annoying!

Excellent soil, however west coast and east coast type varies.
I love Black gold cactus and succulent mix. However I am very careful where I order mine from because depending on what area it comes from the formula may vary big time. I order mine from a place that ships from the west coast, the formula is always consistent. I am very disappointed with the formula sold for the East coast. It's so full of bark and there is no pumice only Perlite, not to mention it takes forever to dry out. I bought two bags at the beginning of the season from my local green house. The bags weighed a ton, I was so annoyed to see nothing but soaking wet bark chips and few bits of perlite. I learned from a Facebook plant group about the difference in soil by region, and it is true.
