Great book for beginners!
I kept a bunch of really big river rocks when I had the rest taken out of my yard. I wanted to paint them to look like little houses for my garden. I looked to this book for inspiration and tips. I quickly found I’d collected the “wrong” shape rocks for most of the type of houses the author paints, but the techniques, and even some of the design elements, were not wasted. I learned about using waterproof wood-filler to mold chimneys and roof lines, dormers over windows, steps, columns, etc., as well as building up a crooked base. And the great photos are inspiring - so many cute designs. There were a couple of examples of using just the same types of rocks I collected, so that’s good, too. I really like the whimsical design elements the author puts into these examples - that’s exactly the kind of space I want to create.

Awesome and Ingenious!
Well, if you think you've seen it all, you haven't unless you have this book. If a rock is just a rock to stub your toe on or to border your garden, think again! Painting Houses, Cottages and Towns on Rocks is actually a masterpiece of rock art. Lin Wellford has topped her painting animals on rocks with this book that teaches you step by step how to choose rocks and then create charming cottages, farmhouses, Victorian or Tudor houses on them. It's quite amazing. When I first got this book - I was stumped. I told myself that it was just another book from a talented person who can do this sort of thing with ease. But wait - then I tried it. It's not that hard!! What Lin creates in the book is mesmerizing and amazing, but don't let it stop you from trying! If you like little gnome cottages or grand Victorians, you can paint them on rocks! The start up cost is cheap - a few brushes, some dollar bottles of paint, and free rocks - and you are on your way to astounding friends and family, and even yourself with what you can come up with. I live in an area that has some really old houses and I find myself snatching pictures when they catch my eye - I can use the ideas from them on rocks! Great gift giving ideas too. Who wouldn't want a fun cottage rock to put on a shelf, in the garden or use as a doorstop, whatever the use - they are quite awesome. I highly recommend this book. Lin Wellford provides fun examples and steps to create awesome art - the sky is the limit and your imagination can go wild with this technique. This isn't a cheesy guide either - it's 128 pages of step by step instructions and stunning examples for people to really learn from the book. I love it! The author is talented, but she shares it well so others can learn too.

An Excellent Rock Painting Resource
I Love this book! The instructions are clear and concise! The author "Lin Wellford" breaks down the process so that each stage is easy to understand. She includes suggestions for types of rocks to use, paint, brushes, and she even has suggestions for evening out those not so perfect rocks! I think this is my favorite rock painting resource book! All of the styles on the cover have their own section and suggested painting style! Truly a well thought out book on the art of rock painting!

Great Fun!!!
I am no artist & cannot paint or draw at all but when I saw these books I was inspired to give rock painting a try. Now I am hooked. The houses are my favorites altho I have the flowers & animal books, too. I haven't tried the animals yet because I think that will be beyond my skill level but these houses are fantastic!! I've done a few flowers as well. She gives step by step instructions, then you can add your own embellishments. I like all the seasons & since you can only see one side of the house at a time I have Summer or Spring w/ flowers on one & Christmas on the other. I have gone crazy w/ deocrations. They are just too much fun! I encourage everyone to give these a try!

Great Instuctions
These had great instructions for the novice. I have taken off on my own and look at rocks now as what they could be instead of what they are. Makes one look at our feet more.I lived in a small town when I started this hobby, painted local businesses and gave as gifts to them. Soon I had a business going from folks who saw them in the shops. And went on to portraits of families pets. I lived on a river so had plenty of shapely rocks for my projects.

Great Book to learn to paint gnome homes
Ive been painting rocks with gnome homes on them for my garden.. Bought this for my sister who also wanted to paint different houses. So many possibilities. You can take a few things from one house and add a few more and make unique rock houses. Great for a different gift.

Fun and easy
I'm no artist but Lin Wellford gives great instructions with plenty of photos to help even people like me. The results are satisfying and quick, which is important when you like instant gratification. I even made a very small quarter sized version of the gnome home that a three-year old niece immediately grabbed on to. One of the reasons I like to make things is to give them away; painting on rocks is fairly inexpensive and gratifying and appeals to all ages. This is my third book of hers and I recommend it to all crafters and non-crafters alike. You can be as intricate or simple as you like and I don't think you'll be disappointed.

Why only 3 stars?
Firstly, I would like to express my fondness for the books of Lin Wellford. they are generally exceptional and I have had so much fun producing animals on rocks over the past few years. It was only because I rate the other books so highly, especially The Art of Painting Animals on Rocks , that I was so disappointed by this book. Don't get me wrong, the book is ok it just doesn't compare with the animal-focused alternatives. The main reasons I did not like the book as much as the others is in part due to the materials required to produce the final products. For example, whilst the The Art of Painting Animals on Rocks requires only some paint, brushes and some pebbles, with the form of the rock dictating the nature of the painting, this book requires more angular rocks and the addition of filler or moulding clay to adapt the form to suit the result. Furthermore, the designs of the buildings are very American (again I accept that this is a US book) and are not as transferable to the UK as the books which focus on animals.I would like to point out the positives of the book so that people can better appreciate my position and, hopefully, so they won't just write off the book based on a 3 star review. As usual, Lin has prepared a very user-friendly book and the step by step nature of the projects are easily followed by people who want to produce buildings such as these. The materials required are very easy to come across and there is no great expense or outlay required. The finished projects do look good and the staged development gives good tips to take away that are transferable to other projects. The 3 star review is based upon Amazon's rating system (5 stars, loved it; 4 stars, liked it; 3 stars, it's ok; etc). I do think this book is ok and there are strong positives that can be taken from it. In comparison to the exceptional books on animals though, and based upon the architecture and styles of the UK, I would not reommend this as a must have for a UK buyer. That said, the book is worth a read and does contain some good things and should not be overlooked out of hand. The Art of Painting Animals on RocksThe Art of Painting Animals on Rocks
