Welcome to the unexplored island of Catan! As you and your fellow explorers gaze across the uninhabited landscape of hexagonal tracts of terrain, you quickly realize that this unique land arrangement provides ample space for each of you to put down roots. You race off to establish your respective communities by gathering resources from nearby terrain, building your infrastructure, and nurturing trade relationships. Watch out for surprises! Your rivals can block your path or send the robber to plunder your wealth

Review: A Family Game Night Classic That Actually Lives Up to the Hype - A Family Game Night Classic That Actually Lives Up to the Hype I had heard about this game for years but somehow never actually sat down and played it until now, and I can see why it has remained popular for so long. This is one of those games that strikes a nice balance between strategy, competition, and fun without becoming overwhelmingly complicated. The concept is simple enough to learn: collect resources, trade with other players, build roads and settlements, and race to victory points. That said, there’s enough strategy involved that it never feels repetitive or purely luck-based. Every game feels a little different because the board layout changes, so replay value is excellent. What I really liked is that it encourages interaction. You’re constantly negotiating trades, blocking opponents (sometimes accidentally… sometimes not), and adjusting your strategy based on how the game unfolds. It creates a fun mix of competition and laughter, especially with family or friends who enjoy a little strategic thinking. The quality of the components feels solid overall, and setup was straightforward after learning where everything goes. The included instructions were helpful, although I’ll admit there was a bit of a learning curve the first game. Once everyone understood the basics, gameplay moved much more smoothly. A couple things to keep in mind: this isn’t really a quick, casual 10-minute game. Expect around an hour or more, especially when learning or playing with people who like to think through every move. Also, it works best if everyone playing enjoys strategy games to at least some degree—people looking for pure luck or very fast gameplay may not connect with it as much. Bottom line: This absolutely earned its reputation as a modern board game classic. It’s engaging, replayable, and creates a fun social experience that works especially well for family game nights or small groups of friends. Definitely one I can see staying in regular rotation.
Review: Super fun! - We love this game! It's a great one for the whole family and provides a different experience every time we play. It doesn't take long to figure out and has very clear instructions. It's a nice mix of strategy and of luck. We also like that it takes a little longer to play than a typical game, but doesn't take so long that you quit before it ends.

## Questions & Answers

**Q: Is this version different from Settlers of Catan? Is it an appropriate starter game?**
A: Great family game, but very difficult to get started & figure out if no one has played before. We had a 13 & 15 yr old & 2 adults & struggled for a few turns till we got the knack of things. Took about 3 hours to play. Quite fun tho! Buying one for my sister's family now. Hope that helps.

**Q: On a different site it says you can play with 2 players here its says 3 which is it?**
A: My husband and I play all the time. We don't use the "robber" but, if you roll a 7, you DO get to take one of the other's cards. The game takes a bit longer and you should always make one of your first choices a "3 for 1" trade port or you could be stuck without moves for a long time. We have learned to place our original settlements where we can collect the necessary cards to build roads AND future settlements. We didn't play for over a year because we couldn't find anyone else to play. We love the game and finally gave it a go on our own. You have to adjust your strategy and it's a far different game than it is with 3 or 4 players but it's still lots of fun. We love it!

**Q: What were the earlier editions of Catan like that they had to make more editions? Is the 5th a big improvement? How?**
A: Of note, the sea 'tiles' in the newer versions link together to hold the board in place. In the older editions the sea was made up of hex tiles just like the land making for a more fragile play area. I learned this because newer expansions require the newer versions of the sea tiles to work correctly, so early edition game owners need to repurchase to use them.

**Q: The contents listed above for 5th edition state that there are 16 road pieces. The 4th edition lists 60. I assume this is an error?**
A: We do not have this in stock right now, so I cannot check it, but since this is not a listing that we created, I am guessing that it is an error. Barbara J., Customer Service Mgr., The Lake Arrowhead Company

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Catan is my family’s N1 game
*by K***E on July 27, 2026*

Got this game as a gift for my brother in law. I myself have the game as well and so does every single one of my brothers. We absolutely love catan and it’s such a fun board game to play with your friends and family. You need at least 3 players to play. The game itself is made very well. The artwork is very nice and helps you get immersed into the role playing of the game. Instructions are easy to learn and follow. Game speed is moderate. Not too little and less than playing monopoly. If you haven’t tried it you should! You won’t regret it
