The XL is not equivalent to a normal XL, it's more like a medium/large.

I'm am a size 16, and bought a large and although the set does fit ,it is very tight and I feel a bit like a sausage .....It does keep me warm though , so if I bought these again I would go one size bigger ... Note to self ..must go on a diet ...
