Our Colonial grandmothers were much brighter and cheerier than the myth of dour, stiff, black-and-white women who have been so eternalized by Pilgrim-era paintings. Certainly do not "color" Deborah Bachiler Wing as wan and morose. Like most foremothers, Deborah was resolved and resolute, determined to create a home out of a cabin in the midst of a primeval forest. Deborah braved crossing the Atlantic as a widow with four young sons and her father, the Reverend Stephen Bachiler, an irascible fellow who attracted misfortune as though he were a magnet. While their crusade to find religious freedom was thwarted in New England as it had been in England, their experiences helped form the persevering character of America. Review: Wing family history - Great read about my 10th Great Grandma! Loved the book! Review: My Many Times Great-Grandmother - If you are descended from one of Goody Wing's sons (or daughters), as I am and as perhaps the first reviewer is as well, then you will enjoy this easy-to-read and insightful true story of her life with her father, her husband, her children, and her community first in England, then Holland, and then America as they sought religious freedom in the early 17th century. I heard about this book through the Wing Family of America, Inc about ten years ago and read it then, but I have shared my copy with others in my family, and it sits among my family genealogy materials. It's an entertaining reference to have on your shelf. (I have a paper copy from desertcart and not a Kindle version.)

I loved this book
I loved this book. I am an ancestor of Deborah Wing and found it fascinating to learn more about her life and times. I heard about the book at a Wing Family Reunion and have purchased two copies and have given both away. Now need to purchase another.

Goody Wing
This book was of special interest to me since Goody Wing was a distant ancestor! The history was interesting and easy to read. I received one as a gift and then bought one to give as a gift. Thanks.

Founding American mother
As a person who is not only among the thousands of descendants of Deborah Wing, but also a person who volunteers for "all things historic" for the Cape Cod Town of Sandwich, I must say I have recommended this book over and over to the delights of many who have entered our archives in search of their early American roots. It is one of the few accurate sources we have of this 'founding mother' who arrived in the colonies about 1632 with 4 sons, as a new widow and burdened with her rather scandalous minister father. She did inherit good genes from her father though and lived to be 100 years old. Her descendants populate Cape Cod to this day. She and her sons were free and independent thinkers always. Most of her sons became brave members of the Society of Friends, Quaker, in Sandwich which remains the oldest continuous Meeting in the country. The brothers quickly adopted the freer thought after the visit of Christopher Holder to Sandwich from England in 1656.
