What is the difference between this newer version and the older version of Sophie?

There is no difference just the box design is a little different.

How do you clean this? How do I prevent mold?

Do not submerge in water!!! clean with a wipe, there is a hole so that it can squeak and water can get in and cause mold

It does! My daughter loves it. Great teether!

why does this sophie look lighter in color? Is it real?

I just looked at this product at Babies 'R Us. There were two boxes side by side on the shelf. One contained a Sophie with darker spots while the others had lighter spots. I think one may been an older model but I couldn't really tell which one was which.
