It does well what it says it does--for a lot of pens...
This is a brilliant solution to transporting an ink supply for fountain pens. It works flawlessly--as long as you obey the instructions carefully. When others say, as I do, that you should practice with water first, those are good instructions to heed.Fortunately, when I impulsively went ahead and tried it with ink in it, I was over a sink and so the spill was not disastrous. (I was able to clean it up completely!).Key: make sure you stick your pen nib into this tubular well snuggly, quite snuggly. Do so, make your moves correctly, and you'll be fine. By moves I mean, be careful which way you have it aimed (bottom up and above the pen when filling, and for darned sure the opposite direction when taking your pen out). Again, do that and you should be fine. Also, it really fills your refillable cartridge or plunger action fountain pen nicely full. No air bubbles. It works well on the road and at home.Recommended, particularly for those who travel with an fountain pen and do a lot of writing or drawing. But also recommended for stay at home people too. Worth the money. I may buy another.Update 5/10/2013: However, see my comment below: I would check to make sure--concerning any fountain pen(s) you plan to use with the Visconti--that your pen has a nib section that is at least 9mm in diameter, that is right where the plastic portion meets the metal nib.Addendum: I haven't been able to get it to work with my older model Pelikan that is the same size at the current M200. I think because the nib unit/section is too small to fit snugly. So I use it exclusively with my Sailor Sapporo, which is my main sketching pen. Conclusion: the Visconti doesn't work well for all pens, especially small fountain pens.

Super Useful
This is a very handy albeit a little expensive item to have if you are into fountain pens. Just fill it to line with ink and then insert pen tightly making a good seal invert and fill your pen (try with water the first time), you can fill almost any fountain pen with this it is extremely nice in helping get piston and power fillers full to the max, it also gets cartridge converters full to max also but you don't really need this for just that purpose. It holds a lot of ink you can refill between 5-10 pens easily depending on the amount of ink they hold from when this is full so it is great for traveling also. It comes with a little wick of cotton in the cap but filling with this is so much neater I rarely need it as unlike filling from a ink jar you don't get ink all over your pen. It also comes with an eye dropper to fill it with. The only down side and it can be a major down side for some is once you fill it with ink you are not going to changing inks or colors in it often so best if you stick with a color you will use often.

Pricey, but worth it
This works exactly as advertised. It makes filling a fountain pen easy and neat. I no longer worry that I'm going to spill ink all over everything every time I have to fill a pen. (Although, as others have said, it's wise to test with water until you get the hang of it.) I give it only four stars because 1) the price is a little high -- although I have not regretted spending it, I'd have bought more than one if it were less expensive, 2) I haven't had it long enough to know how it will hold up over time and 3) filling it seems a little harder than it needs to be because the eyedropper is rather small and narrow. Also, it can be hard to see the fill line while ink drips down the sides into the reservoir -- but that just means you have to be patient and careful.

Surprisingly useful.
Really was skeptical this would be useful but I like it. My Visconti pens hold so much ink I rarely run one dry but this works well with many of my other pens too. Also I've been buying from Pentime/Chatterley Luxuries for years and they always have incredible quality and service.Definitely practice with water first and find good instructions online (see the other review here for great guide) as the included info is useless. It really is a simple plastic tube and a too expensive but it is very useful.

The easiest and cleanest way to refill a fountain pen.
I have one for every color ink I use because they are kind of a pain to cleanout. I've carried one in my pocket and have never had a drip leak. It is essential to keep a wipe handy to clean the ink off the barrel after filling your pen. True, everyone around you will watch in catatonic suspense as you tip your inkwell up to fill your pen like a syringe, waiting for some three stooges moment that will never happen, which I consider a bonus.

Very poor quality compared to original
I have several of these Visconti Traveling Ink Wells. The original models are excellent - very high quality in construction, look, and feel. The original models look and feel well worth their high price - and they work very well. They were my favorite way to fill a fountain pen - even at home when not traveling.BEWARE - these new models are different. I contacted the seller and they said that the original model is no longer made. These new models are cheap plastitic that look like cheap, made in China, crap. The original models were solid feeling metal and glass that felt like it was hand made in Italy - like everything else that Visconti makes - and my Visconti pens are my favorite. Theyse new ink wells now look and feel like they should cost $9.99 - more importantly, they don't work anymore - the light, cheap plastic construction leaks and makes a mess. This Used to a great product, I am very sorry to they no longer make it. I will have to take very good care of the ones I have.

Way cool for fountain pen users
As a constant fountain pen user, refilling can present a challenge at times. I have long wanted one of these traveling ink wells, so get one I did. I have to say that there is indeed a learning curve - the instruction advice to use the well with water first is VERY important. I have now filled all of my pens using the well and it is fabulous! I have one pen that's fussy about drawing ink in completely, but the traveling well has changed all that! I highly recommend this product.

It works!
This thing holds a ton of ink, and it fit my Namiki Falcon pens perfectly. It is pretty pricey, but I can't seem to find anything cheaper that would serve the same purpose. Great for when your ink bottle gets too low to refill the normal way.

Mécanique italienne….
Le remplissage d’un stylo Visconti est très particulier…. Pourquoi faire simple qd on peut faire compliqué ! C’est un rituel particulier, et cet objet permet un remplissage complet du stylo, une semaine d’écriture !
