Has anyone managed to break the spring? My cheaper plastic unit (which I expected to snap at the hinge) broke at the spring during use.

You never be able to break the springs on gripper it will last a lifetime worth every penny..

How reliable, easy to hold and maximum resistance on this grip, compared to conventional "trigger" grips?

It's easy to hold in terms of both the feel and that you can set it at different distances either due to hand size or to work a shorter range of motion at the higher resistance levels. In terms of resistance it goes from a pretty easy lowest setting up to a higher range comparable to a Captains of Crush number 2 I would say by feel, so pretty heavy resistance; but with plenty of interim resistance options. All round good product.
