Screwpop Ron's Utility Pocket Knife 3.0 Gift for Men Attaches to Keychain and Carabiner with Magtrak Technology Stainless Steel

Leave it to the stoners to come up with this nifty little utility knife. It's no ergonomic razor blade made for extended use but its small and perfect for breaking down boxes (cutting tape). The blade locks in place but doesn't need to be for most applications I use this for. Your thumb will hold the blade steady enough to make a couple cuts. Then just let gravity and the magnet bring it back into place before locking it up. I wish it came with a pocket clip for quick access but a little modification was easy enough. Used an old wire pocket clip (i think came from a manix 2), couple SS washers, rubber washer (to fill gap) and a Chicago screw. I had all this from random projects and worked out fairly well. The chicago screw does add a little more friction on the blade lock but not much since the brass retaining ring on the blade resists compression. Added some vinyl wrap for grip on the front and back of the blade too.

I bought this product because I work at a small drug store often find myself needing to open packaging for food, etc. I got it in combination with a carabiner for my keys. It's really handy for sure. There's a sort of lock which you move out of the way to extend the blade or retract it, and it's quite good; it's stiff enough so that you're unlikely to accidentally open it, but it's also not so stiff as to be difficult although it can be a bit slow. The blade is also held inside its fully retracted position by a strong neodymium magnet, though not so strong that you'll be using two hands to get it off your fridge. For that reason the magnet is also useful for situations where you want to put the blade off just to the side on a metal object for quick access. Some wonder how shaky or stable the blade is. While it isn't perfectly stable on its own (especially in the longest extended position), it's good enough for my purposes. Even then, it can safely be held firmly in place by your thumb or finger as you cut, so long as you're holding the part that isn't sticking out :). As for the bottle opener, I haven't used it, but I'm sure it works well. It's also so discreet that I can walk around with it on my keychain without giving it too much thought.

This small little cutter/slicer is an absolute must-have item (in my case, itemS) around the house. I keep a sanitized one on the fridge for food packaging, one by the main door for rough use, and several other spots (machine shop, work table, garage, tool shed, desk) for all sorts of tasks. The magnetic catch not only helps keep the razor blade shrouded, but lets you "hang" this thing anywhere with a ferrous surface, making them indispensable when it comes to odd cutting jobs around the house or job-site. The only downside would be the top clasp occasionally running off-track, but for those jobs (scoring drywall), I should've been using a full-sized utility knife instead of this thing, but I was in a rush and had one magnetically attached to my work belt. That slight misuse of an item designed for light and medium jobs in no way diminishes its score, since I was literally pushing it beyond its designed parameters. I can safely say that if you're a handy person or an outdoorsy individual, you won't be satisfied with owning just one Screwpop utility blade; like potato chips, alcohol, menthol cigarettes, and pornography, you won't stop until you've filled every corner of your home with these handy cutter!

I just received my Screwpop Utility Knife 3.0 yesterday. I usually wait till I fully test the products before I post my review, but since there is no review yet on this model I decided to chime in. I guess what everyone wants to know the most is the difference from the version 2.0. I've never seen the ver. 2.0 in person but as far as I know the only difference from the version 2.0 is that the placement of the magnet. They drilled a hole at the bottom of the locking lever and moved the magnet inside there. This serves as a stopper that limits how much the lever can be opened. Because of this placement, the magnet is not sticking out anymore. Also, when you open the lever, the magnet pulls the blade right back in so it makes easier to close the blade with one hand. If you already own ver 2.0 then I don't think it's necessary to upgrade. It's thin and lightweight but the sheet metal used is plenty solid. I can even pry cans of paints open with the tip. I was afraid that I would bend the knife but it was totally fine. The finish is all good and no sharp corners. The tension on the blade locking lever is just about right – with a little practice, I can open the lever, slide the blade out, and close the lever to lock the blade - all by one hand. Closing the blade with one hand is even easier since the magnet pulls the blade right back as soon as I open the lock. I feel I can trust the lock will stay closed while dangling around on my keychain everyday. The keychain hole is too small for real climbing carabiners but small keychain carabiner should be no problem. I tied a 2mm lanyard loop instead to avoid added bulk of a carabiner. The lanyard also helps me to grip the knife and makes the one hand opening easier. I tested with cutting blister packages and cardboards. It's great for these light duty tasks. Since it's so thin, my index finger started hurting after extended cardboard cutting test however. The blade moves back and forth a bit and rattles during use because the locking pin doesn't fill the notch on the blade. It doesn't seem to affect cutting performance much but it may bother some people. When the blade is stored the magnet takes care of the rattle. You can fit two thin blades. The original blade that comes with is a thicker kind so you can fit only one blade. I think bi-metal Irwin or Lenox blades are also thick so you can only fit one. Having two blades is nice but it will make selectively sliding one blade out a little more tedious. For about the same price you can get a Gerber EAB knife. EAB looks like a much more solidly build, better engineered knife so it's a better bang for the buck. I chose Screwpop because what I needed was a EDC keychain knife, not a pocket knife that I have to keep track of. I'd rather keep a light knife on my keychain and forget about it until I need it. I don't think there is much more to improve upon this version except for making it more high tolerance and solve the rattling issue (if they do, they will get my 5 stars). The beauty of this knife is in it's simplicity and minimalist appeal. It has a good balance of lightweight, compact size and usability and safety. I guess they could add at least a flat head screwdriver on the tip though. Sometimes, "less is more," especially when you want an effective tool that you can easily carry at all times without loading down your pockets, gear bag, or purse with items that are larger and heavier than they need to be. This little knife allows you to always have a razor sharp blade handy for breaking down boxes, opening packages, cutting cable ties, and every other cutting job that requires a sharp blade but not a long one. If there was any problem with this product, it would only be that it disappears in your pocket and you forget it is there. Blades are very easy to change and though this comes with a proprietary blade, you can swap in your favorite brand and type of standard utility knife blade, like maybe Milwaukee or Stanley, and even use specialty blades of that size (like serrated ones.) You never hesitate to use it on a tough job for fear of dulling the blade - just swap it out. The design is just so elegantly simple, there's nothing to break and the whole knife with a blade only weighs maybe 3 or 4 times the weight of a bare blade - that's the beauty of it. SIX of these knives stacked would be about the size and thickness of ONE standard BIC brand cigarette lighter, if you can picture that... great, easy everyday carry. And cheap. I bought several so I could hand them out to my buddies when they admire mine.

To be part of my every day carry, something really has to be worth its weight and bulk. I have used various knives (both with replaceable blades and with fixed blades) and I think this is my favorite solution so far. Criteria for a useful EDC blade: ================================== 1. I like replaceable blades better because I am just not that good at sharpening and I don't like having to think about whether it is worth dulling my blade on this packaging (I used to use the spyderco bug and it was absolutely perfect except that I was always scared of dulling it). Realistically, most of my use for an EDC blade is opening packages and packaging. 2. Bulk is a huge problem in the pocket. Everything I carry from my wallet and keys to my pen are as minimal as possible to avoid being uncomfortable while sitting and moving around. 3. Low cost and/or high durability is also necessary in an EDC item 4. Safety is a high concern. The blade can't come out easily. Not ever. This is so much more important than being able to open one-handed. I'm never in a situation where opening one-handed is critical, but I am always in a situation where accidental deployment is a deal-killer. Keychain jingle is also a deal-killer. This obviously accepts standard utility blades, of which I have a zillion including some that are much higher quality than the included blade. You can get smaller utility blades as well as the snap off kind in some knives and I was tempted, but I often cut things with a lot of resistance, so I prefer the full sized blades (which are also cheaper and easier to find). Positives of this knife: =========================== + The magnet is just the right strength and location. If the blade is deployed and you open the lock, it sucks the blade back in. It keeps the blade from jiggling around (and dulling itself). It would prevent the blade from accidental deployment if the lock failed. But it doesn't stick to keys or other metal items in the pocket. I have the version 3.0 and it is perfect in this respect. + I was afraid the lock would open easily--I feel like it could use a detent--but it doesn't open on accident. At least, not yet. It takes a little effort to open the lock and then you have to slide out the blade. No accidents here. + The overall knife is pretty robust but not terribly heavy. It is not as minimal as I would prefer, but it's pretty close. The quality and durability appears to exceed my expectations for a minimal tool of this sort. Negatives: ============== - There's no reason for a bottle opener here. Bottle openers are on every tool ever, and most of them are better than this one. This "bottle opener" is just a little hook that will catch on your clothes. The design would be better if the metal just went all the way across to maximize strength instead of giving you a half-baked bottle opener. I'm probably going to grind the bottle opener off. - This is longer than it needs to be. It doesn't need such a huge round hole at the top and it doesn't need as much length as it has either. As it is this is longer than any of my keys, and that's too long. A smaller hole/hinge mechanism would be a big improvement, and then length should be minimized as well. - Although friction holds the lock in place well right now, I can imagine that it may not always do so after some use. A little detent would be an improvement in the design. I have thought of putting a small, fat rubber band (like the kind you get on broccoli) around this for extra security and to reduce the noise of it banging on my keys (primarily while I drive). At the moment it's probably not worth it yet, but this design could indeed be improved. - There is too much side-to-side play here when the blade is being used. The metal is curled under to hold the blade but should be curled tighter. I'm half tempted to try squishing it with pliers to tighten up the tolerance. No reason for all that extra space when we know what thickness standard utility blades are. Final Thoughts ================ Overall this is worth carrying every single day as I do. I use it often and have not yet had big enough complaints about it to drop it from my EDC, as I have so many other knives. That's actually pretty high praise. Not to say a few tweaks couldn't improve this, but it comes very close to perfection.

I use this more than any other knife I own. It's so handy. I keep it on my keyring. Is small enough to be unobtrusive and easy to keep with me. It's easy to use..

I found YouTube videos containing reviews of Ron's Utility Knife. The knife had several features I found appealing so I did some internet research and decided to order one. At $10, it seemed like a good deal. The company, Screwpop, appears to put a lot of effort into making items that are well-made. ::::What I like:::: All metal construction, Neodymium magnet, uses standard blades, doesn't require a tool to change blades, blades are easily changed, small size, lightweight and the large keyring hole. ::::What I don't like:::: The inability to easily open and advance the blade with one hand. The open architecture easily allows debris to enter the housing and blade track. The corners of the track easily snag due to the cupped, U-shaped design. The Neodymium magnet attaches to other items in my pocket which makes it difficult to remove the knife by itself. Arrives in a blister pack. :::After a month::: This item is so annoying to open/close, that I don't carry it. I stuck it in the Jeep toolbox. When I have other blades that open/close much easier and quicker, there is no reason to fumble around with this item. It's just too much trouble to use. Initially it looked great but I never realized how irritating the open/close (meaning to expose/retract the blade) would be ... especially if you need to do this multiple times. I want simple -- not multiple two-handed steps. I regret this purchase. 3 stars is being very, very generous.

この手の替刃を使うナイフはゴツイのしか知らなかったので買ってみました。実際に手にすると質感も良く、頑丈さが伝わってきます。とりあえずAmazonから届いた段ボールの箱の開梱に使いましたが刃をちょっとだけ出した状態にできて使いやすい。 お値段もEDC系の小物としてはリーズナブル。私ももう一個買って、エマージェンシーキットにメス刃の替刃を使うナイフと一緒に入れとこうかと思ってます。 ただカラビナは要らない人が多いと思うので、外して値段を少し下げて欲しい気はします。栓抜きも要らないのですが、EDC系小物には隙あらば付けるものですし、邪魔になるものでもないからOK笑

Pros: Compact with Adjustable Blade Length. Blade Automatically Retracts if unlocked and tilted up. Cons: kind of slippery in the hand. Blade is Indexed rather than Locked in place. Blade will fall out easily if unlocked while tilted down. Bottle Opener. Feedback: Some form of spring tension to the indexing/locking bar. Some form of gripping surface like checkering along the rolled edges.

This has been my favorite purchase in a while. Becuase of the magnet there is no blade travel even if locking clasp is open and I shake it. Easy to open one handed. I have dropped it several times and hardly even a scratch. Bottle opener works great and because of the magnet you could securely place this on a fridge or work area with confidence it would stay there. Only downside would be that it's harder to find 4 slotted knives. My hardware stores don't carry them so I have to order them online here. The Lenox blades work well.
