Directed by newcomer Reinhard Klooss, Tarzan is a thrilling CGI adaptation of the timeless classic "Tarzan of the Apes". The film features the score of the prolific David Newman (Anastasia, The Brave Little Toaster, Bowfinger), who expertly captures the wonder of the world of "Tarzan". Pounding drums, delicate strings, and more exotic fare form a powerful yet intimately touching companion for the ape man and his adventures.

One of David Newman's finest
Well, if you want to own the physical copy of this CD you are going to have to unfortunately pay a little bit more for it because it seems that it is only offered as an import. As I have said in other reviews, I prefer to buy physical copies rather than digital because, in my opinion, you never really own it otherwise. No matter which format you use, film score fans can't go wrong with this release. I had heard about another animated film featuring Tarzan but never really followed it until I saw the score pop up on Amazon. After listening to some samples of this, I just had to have it. I have a few David Newman scores in my collection and this by far surpasses all of those. When you compare animated film music to that of a "regular" movie there are quite a few noticeable differences. They tend to be brighter, thematic, and less ambient than other scores. They seem to tap into the child like "imaginatorium" of our brains. Newman's score certainly does this with masterful skill. Every track successfully contributes to the musical soundscape of this story. You have many themes present here and Newman gives us what we expect to find. There are grand sweeping orchestral movements that have you swinging through the trees, playful movements, emotional tear jerkers, exciting action, and tension filled cues that compliment every aspect of this movie. Two of my favorite tracks are #6 "Growing Up" and #9 "Tarzan Helps Jane". These are the two that got me hooked to the score and you can find many others that will having you closing your eyes and wishing you were exploring in the jungle. The last track on the album is a song by Placebo entitled "Loud Like Love". I don't really care for music like that but that is where we get the "various artists" from. The rest of the CD is David Newman at his finest. It really is a great score that I am sure any film music fan will appreciate and enjoy. The import CD really has nothing special about it. There is no extra sized booklet with extended liner notes from the composer or director. Pull out the cover from the CD case...open it up and you have a picture on the left page (scene from the movie) and credit notes on the right. I think I prefer this album cover over the MP3 version. Your going to have to pay a little more for the physical import version, but no matter what version you get...this sure is one great score.

Not without Phil!
Although I like the playing and recording quality, the music composition is a little lacking. I love the movie but without the Phil Collins songs the soundtrack just sits. Yes it sounds primitive with the drums beating but the melodic content just doesn't grab me.

Tarzan s a series by Edgar Rice Burroughs that total twenty-four adventure beloved books which were followed by several additional books co-written by Burroughs, or authorized by his estate, as well as two novels that Burroughs wrote for children that are not counted in the official series. Many Tarzan films were made. This animated film is not based on any book in the series, other than superficially, such as the hero being called Tarzan, that he is raised by apes, and falls in love with a human girl who happens to visit the jungle called Jane.In this 2014 animated film, Greystoke, the father of the youngster who calls himself Tarzan before ever entering the jungle, hears about a huge meteor that fell to earth, believes it contains enormous energy, searches the jungle with his wife and young son, who seems to be about six or seven years old. He and his wife are killed. His son survives and is raised by a female ape whose husband was killed by a vicious ape and whose child fell over a cliff and was killed. Many years pass and the surviving head of the Greystoke empire decides to find the meteor. He is an evil person. He brings Jane to the Jungle convinced that she knows the location of the meteor. He shoots Tarzan’s ape mother and has a large army of mercenaries to fight Tarzan. While this is not the true Tarzan story, I think children and even many adults will like it. I did. Adults will certainly like the music.

Underrated big adventure score. Strong orchestral work with major themes. Whole album plays very well. Mr Newman is an unsung hero of film music and more should take note of his skills.
