Great idea, poor execution.
Great idea, poor execution. It's little on the expensive side, but hey I like gadgets. Problem is, this failed while using it for only the second time. It's not the first one that broke either. I previously had an ember model. That stopped working too. What about support? Nope, you're on your own. I have tried contacting Supermechanical via their app, via email, and via phone. Communication is extremely sporadic, and I'm no closer to having the issue resolved.Recommendation: Avoid.UPDATE: I finally heard back from Supermechanical. Apparently they've experienced staff problems. They apologized and sent me a replacement Coal without quibbling.UPDATE 2: And it failed first time I used it! Seriously. I am so done with this now. Looking at something from Thermoworks instead.

worth every penny - app needs work
LOVE this thermometer. We get excellent cooks on meats every... single... time...The minus-one star is for the app. There are now many thermometers similar to this on the market, but what sets the Supermechanical apart is the app. The way I view it is, in that case, that app should really blow it out of the water, otherwise, I could just buy a cheaper thermometer that monitors what I'm cooking without the app.The app uses obnoxious sounds for the alerts (with no way to change, as far as I can find), and is not very intuitive. For instance, if you launch the app prior to plugging the thermometer into the headphone jack, it requires you to take a tutorial.... every time... Also, when you set a temperature, whether a preset or your own setting, it doesn't remove the other set temps. I get why maybe this needs to be in place, but much more often than not, if I am setting a different temp than the one I previously set, it is because I need a new one altogether, not because I'd like two alerts. All in all, I (we, really - husband and I) love this thing. I would definitely recommend purchasing, just know that the app takes a lot of getting used to. (note to Supermechanical - let's work on this).

Works well... I think?
I bought this product to help monitor my mash temperatures for homebrewing. Overall, it works fairly well when testing it against my thermoworks (+/- 1 degree F). The graphs are easy to read, and alarms can be set with ease (be sure to read how to do this before you actually try). My issue with this product is that there seemed to be a delay in the output, meaning when I needed to raise my temps (applying heat), the temp read 149 for a couple minutes then shot up 8 degrees suddenly, down 4, up 2, then settled at 150. I understand thermodynamics and basic water workings to a degree (when heat is applied, the water / mash will not heat up uniformly), although this seems to be a bit .... eratic? All the same, it's good for giving you an idea as to where you're at when everything is stable although I don't think that's the point of getting this. I'll need to play with it more, hopefully it's not defective after being in the wort for 60 minutes (their website says the probe is water resistant for short periods of time). My probe was never fully submerged, I merely clipped it to the top of my mash tun so approximately 80% of the probe was in there.

Great device for calibrating ovens and monitoring your cooking
I bought this to record how out of range my top of the line Samsung Induction oven was and try to adjust it. Unfortunately the oven calibration can only be done at one temperature and this change is not uniform from 200 to 450, so 350 is perfect, 450 is to hot, and 200 to cold. When this probe is connected to an iPhone or iPad, you get an excel spreadsheet showing the change in temperature over time. When you insert the probe into what you are cooking, you can get an indication from the graph when the food should reach your desired temp.

App is unusably buggy
The app is so bad. It hangs constantly and it takes 15 minutes of poking and rotating and restaring to get it to show a temperature reading. This makes it considerably worse than an old fashioned mechanical thermometer

Great device, but broken after 18 months
I gave this to my dad for father's day, about 18 months ago. He loves it. The only problem is that, just over a year later, the cord has a short in it. He noticed that some of the wiring was frayed/exposed when wiping it down after a use, and it's functionality has decreased. He loves it, so he's asked for another one. But it seems a bit expensive for something that may have to be replaced every 1-2 years if this is a persistent problem.

This is very handy for making beer and starts for beer. I leave it plugged into my phone or ipad and set desired temp, and it will send me a notification on the other device when that temperature is reached. This gives me a little more freedom to do other things instead of constantly watching the temperature.
