Great value kit, a few low quality parts.
Ok, so the kit is about 90% great. I enjoy everything in it and it serves it's purpose quite well. There were only some minor annoyances that come with the kit that can be easily replaced/fixed. I would say to get the kit overall, but there will be a few things to buy to make it usable consistently for more than a week or so.Pros:- The multimeter has a backlight that can be toggled on for a few seconds then it turns off automatically, this is nice as not all low-end multimeters have this. The measurements are decently accurate, but remember that this multimeter doesn't auto-home in on what level of voltage/resistance/current you're measuring, so you have to manually choose the range on the knob.- Soldering iron is great and the temperature control is accurate. This soldering has a very easy to use temperature control knob towards the bottom of the unit. I would recommend 330-350 as a temperature on the iron for using the solder that comes with it and most other generic materials. It's very comfortable and doesn't get hot on the handle.- The soldering wick works decently well so far and I am glad it came with the kit.- The black and red wire that came with seems to be of decent quality and I have used it a little bit. It's not enough for a project, but for small repairs and replacements, it'll do fine.- The solder that comes with the kit works, it's not high quality by any means, but it'll get the job done. Do note that it's rosin core and doesn't have flux in it. Flux also doesn't come with the kit, so I would recommend getting some or some new solder that has flux in it.Cons:- The desoldering pump that comes with this kit is meh. It works if you have a huge glob of solder that you need to get rid of, but it really does need to be big. It's very situational, sometimes it'll work great, sometimes not at all. Don't buy the kit just for this.- The multimeter leads. This is a very obvious issue if you've ever owned a multimeter of cheap quality, it's almost required to throw away the leads for cheap multimeter as they can break easily and usually give bad results. In fact, the first day I got the kit, I was testing out the multimeter on some outlets around my house and one of the leads split from the tip while I was pulling it out from the socket leaving a 1-inch rod of metal sticking from the wall. This was very dangerous and I later found out it was a result of the horrible soldering job used to create the leads. All in all, throw away the leads that come with the kit and buy some better ones (make sure they are at least CAT II 600V).- The tips of the soldering iron aren't of great quality. I would say if you plan on using this for more than a few months of consistent usage, plan on replacing the tips with something better.- The instructions for the multimeter are not that great, look up online how to use similar multimeters of the same quality (because more expensive ones are easier to use).- The multimeter requires a 9v battery that doesn't come with the kit, so keep that in mind.Soldering iron cleaning: If you haven't ever used a soldering iron before, please learn how to clean it properly after each use from YouTube or somewhere else. This will greatly extend the lifespan of the solder tip and will make your iron not dwindle on performance over time nearly as much. I would highly recommend buying a soldering iron cleaner that uses a coarse wire to clean it, like the "Hakko 599B-02 Wire-type soldering iron tip cleaner". Otherwise, the sponge that comes with it works all right. In conclusion, should you buy this kit? Yes, you should. I would recommend buying some flux or some solder that has flux in it. You need a 9v battery to power the multimeter that is not included. Plan to buy some new tips for the iron if it will be used consistently for a long time. Also, BUY NEW LEADS FOR THE MULTIMETER, the ones it comes with are beyond trash and can possibly become a hazard if they break during operation like mine. To make this kit worthwhile, I would expect to spend $15-$25 more to buy the new leads, a 9v battery, and a soldering iron coarse wire tip cleaner.EDIT: The first tip has oxidized at probably 3 hours total of use, so yeah, buy some new ones
