Kazumi Magica
So this is a spin-off series of the well known series Puella Magi Madoka Magica. Besides some very minor cameos PMMM is not central to this manga's plot. That said to me the real big things I look for in manga are story and art so imma split the review as such:Story 7/10 - It's not bad. It's light hearted at first but hints at much darker things to come here and there. This first volume introduces us to the amnesiac main character and her allies. They beat on witch-like beings and that's pretty much it. Looking forward to seeing where it's going though.Art 9/10 - Very good designs. The characters are all cute and the enemies are cool in a evil way. The art style is very different from madoka, but that's fine with me because I personally really like this style a lot. The only thing is the action scenes are sometimes hard to follow and might take a second look to grasp what happened.Total: 16/20 (4/5)

Almost as emotionally horrifying as the original.
This is a review of the entire Kazumi Magica series: It's good. A fitting spin off that keeps true to the originals tragic themes and emotional violence. At first you may disagree, it seems more light hearted and has signifigant changes to the status quo... you may even wonder if this is Pre or Post Madoka. But as with the first few episodes of Madoka, after the first book (or 2) things take a turn for the worse. (and all of the strange inconsistencies get explained)Its not AS good as Madoka Magica, but I honestly wonder if it's because now it's been done. If this had come first, would we then say Madoka was treading old ground? Maybe...If you liked Madoka Magica, and you are looking for more of the same (though with a different group of characters) then this is the series you're looking for. It's much better than the other 2 spin offs that danced around the story of Madoka without keeping the dark tone.

doesn't really feel like Puella Magi
The story is alright, the amnesia plot and the knowledge that Puella Magi stories are typically dark were neat. Like Madoka Magica, it has a bit of a slow start but unlike MM this never "ramps up" in intensity. There is also a pretty annoying trope that pops up: unnecessarily perverted panels.Look, I don't mind some ecchi in manga, its practically a given. A butt shot here, or cleavage there I can look past, but this story is a little overboard. Especially near the beginning, every other page has a nude character, or someone's butt/chest is the focal point of a panel even when the scene/discussion they're having has nothing to do with it. Several panels look bad because they focused more on getting the butt-shots in rather than making the overall frame look good. Its all thrown in your face when one character feels embarrassed she becomes nude for a second when she transforms, and wonders if she can stop it, then the writers leave a cheeky note about how she can't and has to deal with it. Then the whole "bonus chapter" at the end is literally the characters addressing the perverted camera angles followed by more upskirts and nearly exposed nipples.Ecchi has its place in manga, but PM was never really about that. It feels forced and self aware to a point you know the artists know its out of place but they don't care. I know Japanese culture is different but these are middle schoolers and it just feels gross how blatant and obvious this is.I know plenty of manga readers have absolutely no issue with this, but for me the over-sexualization of middle schoolers and a story that was never previously sexual in ANY manner is not enough to continue after Volume 1

Light and fun; an amusing read with a little mystery thrown in
If you're into Madoka Magica, magical girls, cute things, or fight scenes with cute girls in it, this manga is for you. There's the cool costumes, the fascinating witches and their motives for hurting others, and best of all, a protagonist who actually loves what she does, knows she isn't perfect, and both relies and is relied upon by her friends. Add to that a little mystery surrounding the protagonist, Kazumi's source of amnesia, and you get a manga that kept me hooked from start to end.The artwork is really good, with great facial expressions, impossibly cool clothes, and locations drawn very well. The plotline is simple to follow but it isn't boring at all, you get to see Kazumi learn the ropes about what it means to be a magical girl and see just how well these girls track down and hunt witches. Finally, the food puns, oh yes. This was a very nice read, and I would recommend it to anyone looking for a manga that is light and fun.
