The Gentleman's Guide to Pipe Smoking Paperback – March 14, 2013

Pretty good overall, you probably don't have a chance at putting everything in a single book. Otherwise very comprehensive and fun to read.

Very informative and easy to read for pipe starter. I enjoy reading the book and start my pipe smoking real soon.

One star. Here's why: If I'm paying for a book ($15 no less - for a paperback), I don't think it unreasonable to expect a couple of things.1. The book should be free of grammar errors. Please, Mr Davis, hire an editor (or fire the one you have and get another). "It's" is not possessive it's a contraction for "it is" (see what I did there?). Sleight is "the use of dexterity or cunning" not "small in degree; inconsiderable" as was intended (that word is "slight"). Nothing detracts more from the power of the written language (or from an individual as an author) than the inability to use it correctly.2. Content shouldn't read like a college freshman's term paper. Underdeveloped content, lack of flow, grammar construct issues (the aforementioned notwithstanding) all make me wonder how this ever made it into print.These aside, perhaps the biggest pet peeve I have with this book is the choice on font size. Did I miss something when I ordered it? Is this the large print edition? Seriously, the font size in this book is 17pt with line spacing at least at 1.5 lines. That means, had this material been conveyed in the format of a REAL book (say, in 12pt) the book would likely have been half (if that) of its 108 pages. In fact, I took page 6 scanned it in to my computer and ran a little test that proved exactly that. This alone makes me feel like I've been duped into buying a pamphlet that was fleshed out to a more respectable book length using typographical tricks instead of real content.Shame on you, Mr. Davis, for publishing this, shame on Amazon for selling it and shame on me for thinking this "book" was of any real merit. Readers do yourselves a favor and save your money. If you can't handle longer books on this subject and are only looking for an introduction, find one of the plethora of blogs on the internet and start there. Your wallet will thank you.

Royce has written as straight forward a book that could be written on a "how to" subject. I especially found it refreshing nothing negative was ever said about others styles of smoking a pipe or others opinions.

This simple an very pleasurable book is a must for the new pipe smoker ,relaxing to read an the reassurance anyone may need before ,during an after a good thought provoking smoke.

This is a good book if you are new to pipe smoking and are looking for a place to start.

It was written in large print, and there were grammar errors. I have to admit that I don't trust what was written in the Guide. For example, the author was wrong about the term "cake." This term is used to describe the black residue within the bowl caused by much use. It really means the top of the tobacco which cakes together when you tamp after lighting. This is important so that the tobacco will burn from the top down instead of burning from the bottom up.

For the experienced and novice smokers alike. A solid primer if you will

I downloaded this for my Kindle and read it all in about 15-20 minutes. There is interesting information here, although it is written in a style that skips through the interesting details quickly and just gives some bare facts; an opportunity missed I think.All in all this is an essay, not a book and certainly not worth £4.09 I'm afraid.

The author did a good job of covering the basics of pipes and tobacco. There were one or two anomalies in his vocabulary and naming of things, but in all it is of very little importance. Well done, well written and quite enjoyable.

Still to reed this book but a snip for the money will get in to it Sume time the fact that it's on kindle make all the difference
