Avoid this vise AND Does not fit 2-1/4" benches without a shim
Both the product description and the manual say that this vise will fit a workbench 2-1/4" thick without a shim. This is wrong. I did a test fit and saw that it wouldn't sit flush with my 2-1/4" benchtop, so I tried it with a 1/4" shim and it looked good. I installed it with that shim and it's STILL proud by about 1/32". Since the back face of the vise requires wood screws to install, I can't just throw a small shim under it and reinstall it unless I move it or fill the holes. I'm going to have to file the vise down if I keep it.The quick-release mechanism intermittently skips as well. Mind you, I installed this vise minutes ago. This skipping makes it impossible to open/close the vise until the mechanism decides to catch. With my limited experience, it appears if you tighten the vise "too much", the quick-release will skip, preventing you from opening the vise. And you HAVE to tighten it "too much" to hold work securely because the jaws aren't parallel. You can fix this by adding pads to it and make the pads parallel, but you shouldn't have to.The vise can only be described as "crusty". The entire vise, screw and all, are covered in a thick grease (for rust protection) that is full of metal and paint chips. I haven't had a chance to look because I'm so frustrated, but I assume that's what's causing the quick-release to not seat properly. It was either used when I got it or the packaging is abysmal. The box had fallen apart completely. One corner had a hole in it so large I could stick my hand in it. The screw was poking out the back and the box was more tape than cardboard. All that was in the box was the vise in a plastic bag, the manual and a thin piece of corrugated cardboard. The vise is 25 pounds, give or take. It needs more than just an empty box for shipping! If I didn't just spend the last 2 hours putting this on by myself and hadn't bought all the hardware to install it, and hadn't drilled holes all over my workbench, I'd return it... if I had a box to return it in.

Quick Release Began to Fail After 3 or 4 Years
I was quite happy with this vise for the first 3 or 4 years. That is when the quick release nut started to slip when you try to loosen the vise. I am not sure that it is actually the nut, it could be that the vise has developed some play that allows the nut to click so that it is difficult to loosen the vise's hold. I have tried to mitigate the issue but nothing I have tried seems to do any good. Now that the vise is about 5 years old, it is pretty much unusable. I gave it 2 stars as it did work great for a while. Just do not expect this vise to last as long as some of the heavy duty vintage vises. Consider it a throw away tool. Use it while you can and replace it when it fails. I will spend more for a quality replacement. Buy once. Cry once.

I've been using this for occasional hand tool woodworking for almost four years now. It's a classic design that works pretty well. Mine is lined with maple on both jaws, plus some leather on the outer jaw. There's one major flaw that I can see with the vise, and that's the quick release mechanism. It was great while it worked, but the flat bar under the vise that turns to release the grip on the lead screw did not hold up. It easily twists. Now the jaws release when a certain level of clamping force is applied (the level of force varies.) I've put off replacing the vise because I can usually get adequate clamping pressure, but it's not ideal.I have one other minor complaint. I managed to break the metal that holds the sliding dog in place by putting a bit too much force on the dog. I replaced it and added a section of flat steel bar to support it, and that's worked fine.

I love the quick release on it, super quick, super easy to operate and the thing installed so easily. Mym mistake however was not mortising the bottom into the bench to drive hte jaws all the way to the top edge of my bench resulting in the extension dog to be usable. I can easily fix this by just milling a new dog for the jaw and extend it up 3/4", all solved and easy fix.

Great vise. I've only used it a couple weeks ...
Update: the quick release mechanism has started slipping. Trying to figure it out so I can keep using it.Great vise. I've only used it a couple weeks and it's my first one ever so I don't have a lot to compare it to but it's really awesome.Cons: The face plates don't line up square to each other. Might the right side engages before the left side. Installed a couple wood pads and this has helped. Might have to remove the pad on the front face and plane it a bit to get it even. More of a nuisance than anything. The ball on the end of the handle comes off easily. If you get this vise, get blue loctite at the same time. Save yourself the hassle. But overall, works great and really cinches things up well. Would buy again.

I would rate it higher if they would have provide the required bolts and wood screws.
It took me a hour to get the required 5/16 lag bolts, wood screws and the metric bolts. This item would be perfect if they would supply the required bolts that they sized. The total cost of the hardware was less than $2.00. In stead of producing a first class vise. They produced a third class product. I live 30 miles from local hardware stores and this really made me think twice about recommending the vise.

Great tool!
The vice is excellent. It's high quality, sturdy and holds materials perfectly. Some notes:1) It does not come with mounting hardware, so you'll need to pick up 1/2" diameter bolts to mount it.2) The edges are quite sharp, I ran a file over most of the edges after slicing my finger on one of them, now it's great.3) The rear mounts are slots, which make for really easy installation, kudos to the engineers!

Saludos cordiales.

Pretty good for the price.
Vise works good but face plates dont line up parellel, the tilt towards top though and may be meant to be like that? Dont see it being a huge issue and quick release is nice so pretty solid for the price.

Ok not perfect
This vise is heavy duty , the castings are a bit rough and finishing could be better . I found the quick release mechanism not that smooth . Compared to my brother's Record which he has had for about 15 years his quick release is as smooth as butter. My expectations where not all met, though I am sure I will get to love it in time once I put it to work
