Can this be planted in garden now

Yes, now is a very good time as the earth is still warm and damp. Cover to about an inch above the plant. Good luck

How deep does the soil have to be when planting.

About twice as deep as the pot it arrives in.

Plant arrived in march which was a very cold time so didn't plant until april with plenty of good soil. however it looks like it died! what can i do?

Really sorry that your Clematis died. The weather this spring has been exceptionally cold. There is nothing you can do. We have had similar problems with our garden too. Better luck, next time.

What is the best time for buying these to plant?

Mine is just starting to come into leaf now, after it's winter slumbers.
