This scruptious piece is vintage David Winter, demonstrating that the great artist can intoxicate us with the charm and whimsey of his fantastical imagination. The great chimney defies belief and must have been built for a commercial reason and later adapted for the cosy cottage that adjoins it today. My guess is that it was the stack for a brick kiln which became disused. One of the men who made the bricks took it into his head to build himself this snug little home and embellish it with fancy thatch that any professional thatcher would have been inordinately proud of. The man was obviously skilled at many trades and crafts, and so gifted a fellow with such an inviting home wouldn't have stayed a bachelor for long. What a perfect family cottage; you can imagine the children playing around, thoroughly enjoying themselves by the chimney and up and down the flight of stairs to the front door. The title, Whileaway Cottage, suggests serene calm and gentle peachefuness, with nothing more invasive than the drone of a bumble bee to disturb the stillness of the countryside. Here one could fully relax and forget those cares and woes that beset others who live in less favoured accommodation. Here is tranquility -- everybody at peace with the world and each other. Spend a little time holding Whileaway Cottage in your hand and have some of that soothing balm transfer itself into your body. It will restore you to quiet contentment.
