Review: Amazing value in speakers so good that they have been made for 20 years - These are great small bookshelf speakers from JBL. An indication of how good is that they have been made for nearly 20 years, definitely not a member of the speaker of the month club. These are made for professional use, so there is no wood veneer finish. The flat black case fits in with most decors and holds up well over many years. I've had a pair for a decade and recently bought a second pair for another room. I've been a JBL fan for 50 years, and it's amazing that they offer this quality at such a low price. They are capable of exceptional levels of undistorted neutral clear sound for such a small speaker. Deep base is weak with only a 5.25" woofer, but they are easily paired with a subwoofer. While small enough to be used on the desktop, with a powerfull amp and a preamp with a high pass filter they provide extraordinary sound even when played very loudly in my 400 sq ft living room. I use them in both a 2.1 music room and a 5.1 home theater setup. The high pass filter makes sure that low frequencies are only sent to the subwoofer avoiding distortion in the main speakers. This is only an issue if you listen at very high volumes. Make sure your amp can drive 4 ohm speakers. They pair well with my Fosi 120W/channel class D or vintage JBL SE460 60W/channel class AB amps and Klipsch R-120SW subwoofers.
Review: So How Good Are These Speakers? - I wanted something to iisten to my music in a apartment mini-studio enviro. I've lived with JBL's for decades and have a pair of large studio monitors stored away. These are for blasting and a studio, so wanted quality without blasting the neighbors, cuz I spent years trying to get to turn their junk down. I wanted quality without the volumn. Since I listen to at least 6 hours a day, my headphone use has lead to ringing in my ears, time to let the ears heal. So I checked out everything under $400 bucks. I decided to go this route. I don't really care for powered speakers. I have Bose computer speakers, good for consumer listening. Not pro. Pro means balanced, plus 4. I went with these JBL's and Alesis RA 150 Power Amp. The amp takes plus 4 TRS and I love it, good power for small stuff. So today I put the JBL's to a test. Ran ProTascam CD through small quiet Mackie board, I like these, they are quiet, cheap, great or keyboards, have a nice pre and are just good luge along to a job board and quiet, no noise. Set the levels on the channels, no distortion, set the mains to zero out, lots of headroom and them set the amp levels to the volumn and tried to find the sweet spot of the speakers. Holding ear about 6 inches from the speaker A/B'ed the speakers with my studio AKG240 headphones. I thought this would be THE test. You can't beat the sound of the AKG's with speakers under a grand. So how did these tiny book shelf speakers hold up? Not bad! Not the fullness, or richness of top of the line studio stuff. But I would say they held up 80%. So I'm very happy cuz I didn't spent a grand for em. I wouldn't mix or master with them, but I would put them in a professional level. You can't drive them hard, but they are perfect for my current needs. I spent a good hour back and forth, listening to a wide range of well recorded music. So these are keepers. All the gear mentioned here is reccomended. If you love audio, go pro. Also, I listen to most of my music off my Macs, use audio/in/out boxes. 16bit sounds better with 24/96 converters. Also, If you have a DAW you can up convert your remasters to 24bit. This is bitmapped but still amazing, 24/96 is the standard now, Itunes player play these files. This is for real music lovers. People say it takes up disc space, heck, I have plenty on my terrabyte drives. I just love my music so much.

## Questions & Answers

**Q: Are they good as near-field studio monitors for home studio? Do they work with Denon DRA 500ae receiver?**
A: I have a recording studio in my home and have been playing and engineering music recordings for 30 years. I bought these as computer monitors in my office - but I sometimes use them to proof a mix. They are nice as an "alternative" to my studio monitors. In my studio I use Mackie HR-824's, Yamaha NS-10's and a pair of Klipsch Heresies to get different "looks" at a mix. The Control 1 has weak/non existent low bass response, so it's not useful as a primary studio monitor. I also find them to be less than flat through the mid-range. So a mix that sounds good on them, can sound "midgange heavy" when you listen to it in the car or any system with a nominally boosted midrange. So I would say, they are NOT very good if you are a serious audiophile or sound engineer and you want to use them as your sole or primary monitors. Where they are good is for mixing a nice punchy bass response(80-200hZ). As a result, I use them to mix drums and bass all the time. If those instruments sound good on these speakers, they will sound GREAT on a high fidelity system. Sometimes, when you mix drums and bass on small speakers, the mix ends up being really boomy and bass heavy once you have subwoofers and full frequency playback. Not so in this case. They have a very controlled bass response. Maybe that's why they are named "control"? So, if you want another set of speakers to check a mix, or if you are doing a lot of drum and bass music, they might be OK.

**Q: Are they self powered? Can I just plug my phone in and jam?**
A: self powered only because they must be connected first to an amplifier old school style with a two-lead cable. Phone cannot be hooked up or plugged directly to the speaker. You must first use an amplifier/preamplifier section for processing the signal from your phone. Some speakers have Bluetooth or network capability and are self-powered w/battery. These JBL Control 1 speaker is not like that.

**Q: how to intall theme...?**
A: did you get the brackets with them?if you use a drill be careful the plastic is very week.do you have Skype?

**Q: what comes with the products**
A: just the speakers, non powered. you will need a power amp, also I use a board to plug my puter into. you can come out of puter but you will need a couple steps before you get to the speakers. you might want to look into powered versions. all depends what level and what you are using the speakers for.I have home production studio and have to have some speaker references without blasting the apartment neighbors.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Damn good Desk Top Speakers!
*by A***R on December 16, 2025*

Wow... these lil speakers surprised me, powerful clear sound. These lil bad boys move some air too... Pleasantly surprised about the mounting hardware it really works. I pounded on these for 2.5 hours... all kinds of music with a beafy Old School receiver and they didn't blink... I remember when my 12'' house speakers cost me $120 (those were the days) But I'm really happy so far.
