A fun strategy games for kids and adults!
If you're not careful you may spend hours running around the cartoony, steam-punk environments blasting aliens! The controls took me a like 20 minutes to really get comfortable with but once I did I had no problem scanning the field for enemies and prizes. Compared to a lot of games I've played the 3D looks especially good as the speech bubbles and boxes seem to be floating right in front of you. While I was considering this game I wish someone could have described the style of the game to me, so let me do it for you. The game's mechanics are somewhat similar XCOM. Movement and shooting come from the same gauge, so you can take some steps then fire your weapon. This game does allow you to undo certain things, like if you run too far you can back up and refill your movement/gun gauge. But if you move then shoot, you cannot step backwards to refill your gauge. Instead of being able to see a large field of view like in XCOM, you are limited to the eyesight of your soldiers, thus losing the advantage of seeing a lot of the map and adding some challenge. The only problem I have was not even with the game. There was a mishap when this was shipped; somewhere along its journey the packaging got very damaged and couldn't be scanned. The mail-person had to take the package back to the post office once I took the game out so she had proof she delivered it! The game itself and its box were fine but the package had black streaks as if it was partially run over or something! Maybe this isn't worth noting since the game was fine, but I wanted to include everything in this review.

What I expected
I ordered this game possibly used since it didn't come with a case just came in a plastic sleeve. For being a possibly used game it's in perfect condition & greatly appreciate that. Now for the gameplay the game really makes you think & plan ahead truthfully. Reason being the game is a third person tactical shooter. You are only allowed to move a few steps, attack a limited amount of time & etc. Everything is done in third person. I would say what makes the game hard is that one mistake could cost you the whole level. You really have to think about how you move & attack. The setting is well a steampunk planet earth & Abraham Lincoln is president of the united states. (which I will throw this out here that steam punk Abraham Lincoln is epic (well in my opinion). You work under Abraham Lincoln to pretty much save the world from an alien invasion. The game is created by Nintendo & Intelligent Systems (they have worked on numerous games with Nintendo & especially the fire emblem games). If you have the fire emblem amiibo's of Robin, Marth, Ike, & Lucina. You can get these characters added to the party roster.I would have to say what makes the game unique the the steampunk setting & the gameplay. I have never played a third person tactical shooter before but the gameplay is fun despite being challenging. In my opinion this game is pretty much extremely underrated & highly recommend it if you are into tactical games where every decision/move counts.

I enjoy every moment of interaction between characters
The plot and writing for the game is really phenomenal. I enjoy every moment of interaction between characters. That being said, the game itself is only so-so. It's easy to see what the design team was going for, but it feels like the game could have used a lot more polish before being completed. This leads to stages where the game is arbitrarily difficult because maneuvering characters into and out of line of sight is a complicated and delicate process.Still, I enjoyed it enough to play through, and once you figure out how to work with the limitations of the system it's not so bad.

Excellent gameplay with great Steampunk direction.
Excellent gameplay with great Steampunk direction. Don't be turned off by commented slow AI turns. These turns are actually quite useful to see how the enemy is strategizing. I spend much longer on my turns than the AI. With that said, the game has excellent art direction so if you're a fan of Steampunk style and/or turn based strategy, this is an excellent pick. You'll pick up various historical characters that you can put on your 4 person team throughout the story. Some are more well known than others (I especially like how John Henry is included as a man that historically lost to a steam powered drill in folklore and he exists in this game universe as powered by steam). Some characters though don't really seem to have as much utility as others in various configurations but the extended roster will surely allow you to refine your team especially in the later missions. Missions themselves are rather well balanced though I found some were a bit too easy to even be a challenge and others were hard due to frequent enemy respawns but in such cases I had to leave my comfort zone to adapt to the style of the mission.Perhaps for a TLDR summary that's a bit off-color, if you enjoyed the movie Inglorious Bastards for it's rewriting of history, I can imagine that you would enjoy this game. ;)

Underrated game
Intelligence systems made this game, it's no fire emblem but this game is definitely fire tho. Gameplay is fun and smooth and the voice acting is top notch. Fire emblem amiibo support is a dream come true too. If you got and Ike amiibo you definitely don't want to miss out on this experience.

A great game from the makers of Fire Emblem
It's always good to see Nintendo come up with new characters and game concepts - and it's a shame when those games never sell as well as Mario and the like. Code Name: S.T.E.A.M. was developed by Intelligent Systems, who make the Fire Emblem and Advance Wars games. If you're already a fan of those games, you'll find lots to enjoy here. It's an odd duck of a game. The art style is reminiscent of comic strips, and the characters are ripped straight out of American literature, in a League of Extraordinary Gentlemen kind of way. The main problem might be how the difficulty is balanced. It's easy for players to pick up, as there's not much micromanagement between battles. However, it's easy to run into trouble during the levels and be overwhelmed by enemies. Still, when you obtain more fighters and weaponry, the game encourages you to replay old levels, which gains you more medals to unlock further weapons. Since the levels are generally well-designed with many secrets to uncover, this isn't much of a chore. There's a multiplayer mode too (which I haven't been able to try yet) and Streetpass capability (ditto) where you can earn more medals to help with the difficulty. It's a great little game, one I wish more people would talk about. Code Name: S.T.E.A.M. should be a cult classic.
