It sounds like this cannot be used to absorb on both sides (unusual wounds), you have to use two of these?

Sides are interchangeable, both same. Would expect both sides to absorb, not highly absorbant - but doesn't stick!

are the pads individually wrapped?

yes, the ones I bought were individually wrapped.

These are individually wrapped gauze pads. I do not believe there is an expiration date. However, after a year or so they might start to yellow and I would not use them.

Curad does not state anything about 12-ply or how many layers are in this pad. This is a non-stick pad similar to Telfa. It is a cotton or cotton-like pad with a non-stick outside layer, which helps the pad not stick to wounds as much as a regular 4 x 4 gauze pad would.
