Lese Majesty

This album takes a few listens. It is soulful and atmospheric, and more subtle than their debut. You can drop the needle anywhere on the record and still find that you are able to immerse yourself in the music instantly due to its seamless flow. Production is superb and Ishmael's lyrics are tight, although less pronounced in comparison to those on Black Up. If you are a fan then pick up the album. What you get is a continuous soundscape of hip hop in its purest, un-diluted form. No frills. No hoes. No guns. No rims. No Jesus Piece. Amen.

KILLER ALBUM. I LOVE SHABAZZ PALACES!!!!! THEY AREN'T WELL KNOWN BECAUSE THEY ACTUALLY RAP. AND REAL RAP ISN'T RADIO FRIENDLY. ONLY THING IS AMAZON INSISTS ON JAMMING AS MANY CASSETTE TAPES AS THEY CAN INTO BUBBLED ENVELOPES, WICH IN TURN HAS SEVERELY DAMAGED THIS COPY ON CASSETTE. THE COLOR IS REALLY COOL ALSO,IT IS TRANSLUCENT GREEN.

It gets you with the production and vibe, the cadence and flow fit nicely. Only later do you realize all the interesting things that are being said (or suggested). Genius album.

This release came as quite a surprise, after such a long hiatus between Lese and Black Up. Shabazz Palaces traffic in sounds and ideas most often pegged with the Afro-futurist cultural aesthetic that combines science fiction and historical fiction, and Afrocentricity in order to critique and reflect on modern life and its many trials and tribulations.The music delves into this space with grace, and panache highlighted by brilliantly conceived sonic palettes that overall are much less rigid and electro-y and more melodic with constantly shifting textures and freer more fluid song-structures and vocals steeped in echo-y reverb reminiscent of dub's cavernous soundscapes and strutting rhythms. Its not your typical radio-fare; its an adventurous, rewarding sonic excursion that will certainly take you on a different path and leave you with a few things to chew on. Highly Recommended.

Mysterious, spine-chilling hip hop (last I can recall like that is Cannibal Ox). No posturing, no vapid lyrics (though as others have noted, they are cryptic so I can't really speak to them). For fans of Caribou and Flying Lotus, though there's not really an apt comparison at hand.

Some of the best hip-hop of our time... These guys are so very musically conscious and ahead of a lot going on in the hip hop game these days.

90年代にシーンを席巻したシアトルのオルタナティブヒップホップ・グループ、Digable Planetsの中心人物Ishmael Butler。そしてムビアの名奏者Dumisani Maraireの息子として生まれ、Chimurenga Renaissance名義でも活動するマルチプレイヤーTendai Maraireの二人によるプロジェクト、Shabazz Palaces。2009年のEP二作、2011年の傑作"Black Up"に続くセカンド・アルバムは、前作同様4ADからのリリース。脳みそをゴンゴン殴られているような重厚感があった前作と比べると、今回はじゃっかんサウンドは軽め。中には完全ノンビートのドローン、ノイズ系のインストゥルメンタル・トラックまで含まれており、下手をすればアンビエントやエレクトロニカに分類されかねない領域。しかし、脳内でぐわんぐわんと鳴り響くドープで歪んだ音響や、簡素なリズムが妄執的に反復されていくトランス感からは、彼らが自身のルーツとして常に強く意識してきたアフリカ、中東音楽の存在を確実に感じます。そしてそんな抽象的な音が大半を占めるからこそ、その中で時折現れる重低音や強いビートの恍惚感が凄いことになっている。特に1曲目"Dawn in Luxor"と、そこからシームレスに続く2曲目"Forerunner Foray"の流れるようなビートとシンセが凄い。語弊があるかもしれませんが、これを聞いていると遠い昔にハシシを吸って宇宙の妄想しながら生活した人々の気持ちが分かるような気さえしてきます。Butlerも負けじと今まで以上に個性的なラップを披露。今までのように明快な声色のラップもあります("Motion Sickness"等)が、ただ電子音に合わせて呟いているだけのようなもの("Suspicion of a Shape"等)から、まるでトランス状態に陥って前後不覚になっているかのようなおぼつかないもの("Sonic MythMap for the Trip Back"等)まで、聞いているだけで方向感覚を失いそうな奇妙なラップばかりです。いわゆる「フューチャリスティックな」という形容をされるヒップホップとしては、Flying Lotusと肩を並べる唯一の存在でしょう。先進的な音作りの背景に、アフロミュージックというきちんとした音楽的土台があるところも素晴らしい。とにかくドープな音に飢えている人は試聴して損は無いと思います。

Sehr experimentell und sehr gut. Die Lyrics, (Rap-)Flows,... sind sicherlich gewöhnungsbedürftig und nicht jedermanns Geschmack, aber mir gefällt der einzigartige, avantgardistische Klangteppich der ausgerollt wurde, extrem gut. Die Stimme des MCs allein verursacht Gänsehaut! FETT!
