Best filter hands down
Let me just start off with saying I don’t think I will ever go back to a HOB filter! I was using a AC50 and 70 Fluval HOB filters on my 55 Gallon tank! And they worked fine but it was an eye sore when looking at them just hanging there, and there was not a lot of room for filter media! I decided to get an upgrade to the Fluval 407 Canister filter and I will not go back! This filter is sleek, easily concealed even with an open bottom tank stand, quite as a mouse, keeps my water crystal clear, has crazy suction and water flow! Hands down super good! It is a bit pricey but it is worth the money! I was a little confused when it arrived and I started setting it up as in the box is only 1 tube, I did not know that you needed to cut it, but that could be my fault as I always assume I know what I’m doing. But super easy to set up with or without directions (I would read the directions just in case)! After you unbox and set up you siphon the water in as directed and once there are no more bubbles, you plug the bad boy in and you just let it go once it’s set up there’s nothing you need to do besides the occasional maintenance and that’s also super easy 10 out of 10!!

New Design that works
I now own two of these awesome 407 Series 7 filters from Fluval. I won one of these several months ago and finally set it up. This filter is quiet and efficient. As you can see in the picture the water is crystal clear in my slightly overstocked 55 gallon community. Also the size of the filter does not take up a lot of space, I have it in a recycle pail from a local chain store in case of any leaks (No leakes to date). The new design is efficient in clearing even the smallest particles in the water column, it is set up for easy cleaning and has enough capacity for diy'g you own media make it more efficient. In the several months of being in service, the only time you have noise, is when the water level drops and if it's not in time when I am doing a water change, I lower the flow and problem solved until the next water change. The flow control can also be used to reduce the flow while feed. The have now introduced a UV clarifier, a skimmer and a spray bar. The unit comes with a spray wand, which works well at breaking up the surface allowing for better gas exchange. I am thinking of adding the spray for better tank circulation and rotation of the column of water in a rolling motion front to back as opposed to just moving the top level of water around tank. This will add to better cleaning, surface agitation and gas exchange. In my opinion this is a great filter and alternative to a larger canister which may be overkill in certain situations. It moves water and the GPH is 383 US Gal/h. Most times the MFGR's states the GPH w/o media in the filter. A canister that won't break the bank and is not huge if you want to hide the filter under or behind the tank, depending on the size of the stand. I own a few different canister from other manufacturers and this one is a cut above. Check it out, I think you will be happy.

Nice improvements in the new 07 fluval series
I maintain aquariums for a living. I have been using Fluval canister filters for more then 20 years now, ever since they were on the 03 series. I probably have about 25 running right now of various generations and sizes. They have had some issues in each of the previous generations, but over all they keep improving and are easy to setup, maintain, and diagnose. Just set this one up to replace a model (404) that was 10 years old and my client was complaining of the noise it was making. Instead of replacing the impeller, shaft, and impeller cover which would have probably helped, we decided to upgrade because of the age of the filter and improvements of a model that is three generations newer. There is a lot of marketing fluff on the Fluval page on what the new features are with this generation. But below are the noticeable improvements for someone thinking about upgrading. -They have made the canister itself more robust by reinforcing the bottom corners, they have improved the aquastop valve opening mechanism (but it otherwise seems unchanged). -The impeller cover seems the same from the 06 series (which has been the best improvement over the old 04/05 series that were always breaking a tab). The new pull out for the media baskets is nice as they all come out and go back in at once. -The filter is noticeably quieter than previous models, its extremely quiet, but not dead silent. I was hoping they would convert over to DC operation on this new generation as that's the route most aquarium return pumps seem to be going. Overall I think this is a good upgrade from the 05 and below series, but if you have an 06 series, you're really not getting too much out of the new model. If you are setting up a new tank and don't have any filter, it is an excellent choice. As mentioned before these filters have some history behind them, and with each improving generation they have became more powerful, reliable, easier to maintain, and quieter. If I am using a canister filter on a new aquarium setup for a client these or the fluval FX series are my go to filter. If I start to see any issues with this new 07 series I will update my review in the future.

Superb Fluval 307 filter
Superb filter I use for a 55 gallon tank. Compared to older model a bit easier to change, but same outstanding filtration and efficacy

Do NOT buy the Fluval 407 Canister
Do NOT buy this Fluval 407 Canister Filter. I ordered this Fluval 407 Performance Canister on 1 December 2025. It took my friend and I two hours to set everything up on Saturday morning the 6th of December. It ran for 12 hours. When I check it Sunday morning I noticed the canister was leaking due to a crack in the side of the canister. It had flooded the bottom of my fish tank cabinet and my wood floor. I immediately disconnected it, emptied the water out, and put it in the box to send it back. I wrote in the comments section of why I was returning it that it was defective and leaked. I dropped it off 7 December. When I did not receive a refund for the Canister The response I received was that the canister was used. : Obviously it was "used" otherwise I wouldn't have known it had a crack in it and was defective!!!! But it was "used" for 12 hours! They even said there was crack in the canister. They refused to accept responsibility for their broken canister. I am working with Amazon Customer Service to resolve this issue.

Still new but super quiet
I just installed this today but the filter is remarkably quiet compared to my previous filter (emperor pro 450) this is my first canister filter but the amount of stages and size for each is a good. The only negative is the price but here you're really paying for a reliable brand and engineering which I think is worth it. A cheaper one at like 120-150$ may break sooner and then meet the price of this but at a lower quality. If you're looking for a quieter experience than a hang on back/power filter then get a canister, I was surprised with this one.

Good Canister Filter
A great filter for smaller tanks if you’d prefer a seamless look and allows for more biofiltering. Although the price is a bit steep I believe you get a good product for the price and it is very durable and is able to grab particles out of the water and filter it. Installation was not fairly tough but the process of installing the O-ring seemed a little confusing at first I wish there was a picture of exactly how it should be installed.

Great canister filter!
Amazing canister filter! It is super easy to use and I add different fluval filters inside and that keeps the water crystal clear.
