Ice Cream Man Volume 1: Rainbow Sprinkles (ICE CREAM MAN TP)

Don't sleep on this series!
This is the first comic I've ever read (I know, terrible) and I LOVED it. I devoured it - no pun intended - all in one go. It's a horror/weird fiction/surrealist anthology all involving a mysterious vendor of, you guessed it, ice-cream. W. Maxwell Prince has created something that is wholly unique and surprisingly emotional. I really recommend it, especially for fans of The Twilight Zone or Twin Peaks.

Enjoyable but no gripping reason to pick up Vol. 2.
Ice Cream Man volume 1: Rainbow Sprinkles collects issues #1-4 of the 2018-2021 run of the series with a creative team consisting of W. Maxwell Prince (writer), Martín Morazzo (artist) and Chris O'Halloran (letters).Ice Cream Man was a series I was iffy about, my local comic guru gave the run high praise and I wound up buying the Quarantine Comic Special. It was a single issue but several creative teams with their own story within a handful of pages, I wasn't keen on it and ignored the series entirely. Having felt I missed out on Ice Cream Man I heard about a new series from the writer called HAHA so I added it to my pull list, needless to say I liked it and opted to consider looking back into Ice Cream Man, bringing me to this volume. For anyone unfamiliar, Ice Cream Man are single issue horror stories that can (as far as I'm aware) be read individually, the only indication of a potential over arching story only presenting itself at the end of issue 4 with the introduction of another character. With that being said, I did enjoy this collection, each issue offering something different and each issue exploring different meanings. Since these issues are contained stories I won't be speaking about the stories at all as its at its best going in blind instead of me going into depth about a story that the issue itself takes a few pages to set up makes it less enjoyable. This was a relatively quick read, I tend to be on the slower side when it comes to reading but I breezed through this on my second read before this review in about 30 minutes, way faster than normal. The artwork was adequate at best in my opinion, nothing out of the ordinary but I did like the artwork in #3 as it seemed to have more freedom. The writing itself was enjoyable, and it's apparent very early on in the first issue that it's a horror comic setting the theme for those new to the series.Overall it's an enjoyable mature comic, I personally think it's biggest downfall is that there is no overarching story (as far as I'm aware), no big meaning in the stories narrative aside from the messages/questions we may ask ourselves (which it does well). I respect that but this is one of those comics that seems better suited to people who buy comics issue by issue from their local shops, it's a single issue story, satisfying the reader after the purchase. Whereas say X-Mens House of X/Powers of X left people wanting more, wondering what happens next after this massive change for the series, something that Ice Cream Man doesn't have (as far as I know). So although I did enjoy it to a degree, there is no gripping sense of urgency to buy the next volume, personally I'm going to stick it out and continuing reading HAHA to get my fix and am unsure when I may even look into the second volume. This may be something other readers are fine with and that's fine, but for me I don't really see a need in looking into buying the next volumes. So I did like it, but it's not on my priority list to pick up the next volume any time soon.Amazon randomises the order of my images so I'll give a few details so you can follow the story of you'd like or just check out the artwork. 1 - "Hi Rick." 2 - "Vanilla!" 3 - "I'm a big boy." 4 - The Brazilian wandering spider… 5 - This awesome distinction… normally I include loads of images but I think in this instance this is enough to peak interest.Hopefully you found this review helpful and happy reading.

Gloriously Bonkers & Brilliant
Great introduction to what is probably the new best comic book series out there. It speaks volumes about the quality of a comic when you read the entire thing in one sitting. I promise you that I most definitely did this and didn't regret it one bit. The stories within are told in chapters set in the same universe each concerning a different character or characters going through some sort of terrifying situation or dilemma. And at the centre of each story is the mysterious and genuinely creepy Ice Cream Man. This comic stayed with me long after I put it down and all maturer comic book fans out there should give this a go. I'm sure you'll love it.

Unusual comic / horror comic collection. Definitely fun.
This short collection centres around an unusual ice cream man who gets involved in various ways in each story, all of which have a horror element. There’s humour as well as horrific situations. Artwork is clear and nicely coloured. Writing is sharp and occasionally witty. Different and worthwhile.
