What does non-universal mean and is it returnable?

No. it means without adapter, it can only used for the F type antenna socket. Thanks a lot for your question, we will change it to without adapter or with adapter, it is really confusing

Why does this flop over when i screw it in? it won't stay upright. is it defective or is there something i'm not doing?

No. You did nothing wrong. I think the reason it can't stay upright because the screw is loose. There is a screw on the junction part. You can tighten a little then it will not flop over.

Can I use this to get radio on my smart phone using the 3.5mm jack?

No, you can't get regular am/fm radio from this. Most smartphones have deactivated the normal am/fm radio function. Most phones are actually capable of getting at least FM but the manufacturers and carriers get money from digital/streaming services.

I need an antenna to listen to fm radio on my sony fm shelf radio model lbtzx66i, will this do the job?

If your Sony has a regular screw-on coax outlet for Fm in back of unit, this antenna will screw right on. If not, look at the adapters that come with the antenna to see if they match up with your antenna outlet.
