Godspell Soundtrack

It was the beginning of the 70's, and the old hippie movement had traveled into diverse directions. Some found God, others found communism, others found sex while still others found empowerment based on skin color of gender. I bought this album in the late 70's when I had become a believer. I liked the song Day by Day, and Prepare ye the way of the Lord. I had heard Jesus Christ Superstar and found that it had left Jesus in the tomb. This version seemed more credible to the biblical account. I had a desire to hear it again, and thought I had downloaded it. I hadn't and this seemed a fair price for this. Sister Janet Meade had a hit with the Lord's Prayer, Miguel Rios topped the charts with Jesu, Joy of man's desire. Calvary Chapel was growing in numbers and freaking out the traditionalists. Like I said, it was a less hostile time. If you like music and you don't view religion as a threat, you'll enjoy this. Quick, before they ban it! Just kidding.....maybe.....no, kidding.......

I like this movie version more than the stage version, so I'm very happy.

I missed out on really seeing this film for decades..... Thanks to TCM, I saw it again for the first time since the 80s and realised just how much I love it. I'm an Atheist who hates musicals, but I adore this music. Just the best.

When I was about eight years old us kids became catholic. Thisfilm came out right around that time and I saw it more than once.For me, it defined christianity. My father's friend gave me thealbum because he was tired of me asking him to play it. These tunes were some of the most important music in my life. I'veseen the movie as an adult and it is definately not the same aswhen I was a kid. But the music itself is timeless. Whether youare a christian or not, there is some creative and funky stuffin this one. Sure it's corny at points and it gets a littleheavy with the message. But songs like BY MY SIDE, ALL GOODGIFTS,and BEAUTIFUL CITY are great songs to start any day with.Hey, I am not a christian, and I love this CD.

Godspell, that well-worn 70s quasi-religious clown musical, was transformed into a wildly creative movie musical in 1973. This soundtrack streamlines the raw, original cast album into a sleek pop recording that is infinitely listenable. The arrangements are gorgeous, and feature, in most cases, better vocals than the original. The sound is pumped up, and the orchestrations now include lush strings and thick, fat horns and soaring vocal harmonies. Beautiful City, written for the film, is beautiful; the finale, with its seamless transition into Day By Day, is truly moving. For my money, this is the best representation so far of Stephen Schwartz' brilliantly hooky and melodic score. FYI, Jesus is played by the luminous, young Victor Garber, whom most people now know as the architect, in the film Titanic.

I’m so so happy with this purchase. I’ve been wanting to get this cd for a while but the only one I could find was $50! But then I found this one and I was worried it would be broken or something because it was so inexpensive but I decided to take a chance. So glad I did! It arrived quickly and in the original shrink wrap. Wonderful cd. Thank you!

Simply one of the best, most joyful, Christ-honoring, exuberant albums I've ever loved. I first experienced "Godspell" in a community theater performance as a teenager, and its songs have stayed with me and sustained me through the years. Incomparable and exceptional. Ten stars.

Without a doubt the definitive version of this cute musical. And best of all it includes the, can't help but smile all the way through track, "Beautiful City". Treasure.

another trip down nostalgia lane with this cd. it must be pretty good as my wife and youngest daughter also like and play it.

Kennen gelernt habe ich GODSPELL (den Film)als Jugendliche im Englischunterricht. Ich war damals so fasziniert, dass mich die Musik und auch die Machart des Films nicht mehr losließen.Das Leben Jesu wird dem Hörer/dem Zuschauer überzeugend, kritisch, mutig, schonungslos nahegebracht. Das macht GODSPELL so großartig und unübertroffen!!! Faszinierend vor allem die Leistung von David Haskell (als John the Baptist und Judas), der leider so früh an Krebs verstorben ist. Diese Musik/dieser Film sollte unbedingt - wie damals bei uns - im Religions- und/oder Englischunterricht eingesetzt werden!

この映画はかなり昔に作られたものですが今観ても感激できる下図少ない作品の一つと思います。日本語スーパーテロップのものは手に入りませんがおもちゃ箱をひっくり返したような中から人の心の温かさを感じられるという点では十分言葉が判らなくても楽しめる作品として推薦させて頂きます。同じ時期に日本にやってきたジーザスクライストスーパースターも自分としてはとてもすばらしい作品としてお勧めできますが、現代の悩み多き時代にあるとスケールの大きさよりもラストシーンで心が暖かくなるこの作品を紹介したいと思います。内容はイエスキリストを題材としていますが今までの”悩めるキリスト”ではなくすぐ身近に存在する若者がそのまま現代に通用しているようで年齢を問わない作品です。今は９．１１で崩壊してしまった米のビルの屋上で踊るイセスと友人のダンスシーンは今観ると感無量のものがあります。試しに是非観て下さい。ちなみに評論家の淀川氏も絶賛の作品です。
