A really effective tool!
QUALITY: This tool is heavy and solid in your hand. The machining on the blade is clearly of high quality and I expect to never need to replace this unless an accident destroys it. I am very impressed and pleased. Keep the blade protector in place and it should last a lifetime. MY USAGE REQUIREMENTS: I adopted a brother and sister pair of Ragdoll wannabe's last fall and purchased this tool to use on their beautiful long fluffy coats after Spring arrived and we saw our first shedding begin. It works and how! This gadget eliminated the fur bunnies in the house which was wonderful. In fact, I advise using a gentle hand and caution or you might turn your cat into a Sphinx breed, lol. I made the mistake of brushing my boy's plumed tail too much so now it looks pretty skimpy and forlorn at the moment until he regrows his fall coat. Note: I also have a senior oriental short hair who sheds far more than the kittens ever thought of doing despite their long coats and this longer length blade does work on her, too but I suspect that the shorter version might be even better but certainly not enough to warrant a second purchase. This still works great on her short coarser coat. PRICE: This was the best price that I found either locally in pet stores including PetSmart and also on the web. Search via Google to see if that remains the case. A WORD OF CAUTION: this tool needs to be used with a gentle hand and not too much pressure especially if you have a bony older cat like my oriental short hair regardless of the blade length that you choose. At nearly a year old they are about 11 lbs now with the soft bunny-fur associated with Raggies. Slow and gentle will win the day and your cat will learn to enjoy the procedure. You can injure your cat if you are too rough or fast so wait until you have time to sit for a few minutes and make the grooming a bonding process. Once a day works wonders resulting in a sleek and beautiful coat. MANUFACTURER CLAIMS: The manufacturer states honestly what to expect and just one swipe gets amazing amounts of hair. I was using the typical wire slicker brush before investing in this tool but the Furminator blows it out of the water completely. FINAL WORD: This tool acts as both a stripper and a groomer combined. If you just want to brush your pet's hair to smooth the surface as you would your own and hair removal is not your main goal, then I suggest using a wire slicker. This tool will act like a super comb and will readily grab shed-ready hair and pull it out in a neat row. Some cats, especially those not accustomed to grooming sessions, will probably need a little time to build up tolerance as this tool has a more aggressive sensation than a slicker. You will need to evaluate your own cat's temperament and may try what I did which was have some favorite kitty treats handy, start with a minute or two and reward when done. This established a routine very fast and now my kitties ask for their grooming session and no treats are needed. They love the sessions now and I think that you will be pleased with the Furminator :D.

Unexpected amazing find! Worth every penny!
I cannot express how amazing this tool is without sounding like a TV commercial or like they paid me off. They didn't, in fact, I bought this brush a couple days before its price dropped by more than half (sad truth). But this deshedding comb has exceed my expectations to an extent I had not thought possible. I have 2 large short-hair cats, one 20-lb, one 17-lb, and both shed like crazy, getting fur all over everything. I have tried a few deshedding brushes in the past with marginal rates of success. They all work a little, but never enough that I feel like it was worth the time I spent doing it. Especially since the larger cat HATES being brushed. With anything. Soft bristle, plastic comb, metal, rubber, anything. He howls like he is being tortured and killed and won't get anywhere near you if a brush is in reach. He's the most friendly cat I have ever seen, craves attention like a dog, and loves everyone... unless they have a brush. The other cat loves being brushed with the same passion with which the other hates it. He will lie there for you to pet for hours if you don't stop. Even food and treats don't compete for his love of being brushed, and a 17-lb cat loves food. I bought this brush for him so he could get happy brushing and I could get less fur on everything. Unsurprisingly, he loved it as much as any brush, but what shocked me was how much fur it took out of the undercoat. I have never had a tool take off that much fur in one sitting. I took more fur off of him in a couple minutes than I ever have with hours using any other tool. It worked so well and so quickly that I tried it on the brush-hating cat as well. Even bigger shock than the amount of fur removed, was the fact that the other cat LOVED BEING BRUSHED with it! He's 11 years old now and has hated being brushed his entire life, but he now shoves the other cat out of my lap to get brushing attention! Now I have to find a way to switch the deshedder for a regular brush before he goes bald HAHA. Seriously tho, it does look like it tugs a little as you brush, as the description mentioned, but the cats don't notice it at all. You don't need to put much pressure on it and my sensitive-skin cat has no problems with it whatsoever. They both love being brushed with this comb, and my house is a lot less furry. The undercoat brushes out in minutes and leaves the cats coats shiny, soft, and almost shed-free. An amazing product that I am so glad I tried.

Good product that works amazingly well if your cat will tolerate it
We have two shorthaired and one longhaired (Norwegian Forest Cat) cats. While I have been using a Zoom Groom on them (which they LOVE and which does remove a ton of hair), positive remarks from our relatives made me want to try this again (I'd borrowed a very old one from a friend for use with a Persian that I was fostering - I was not at all impressed with that one). Since some of the reviewers here mentioned that the longhair version would work fine for shorthaired cats, I bought that one. I was floored by the amount of fur it took off of my shorthaired cats (they are the ones who have hairball issues). I've always been able to get a lot off of them with the Zoom Groom, too, but this took off a lot more with far fewer strokes. Downside: the cats did NOT like it. They were trying to get away from me when I was using it. This was true of all three of them. I decided that I'd try again in several days. The next day my husband told me he had tried it on our longhair, and that he had gotten a lot of fur from her (including her belly) and she loved it (he was rubbing her ears the whole time). This girl LOVES to be groomed, so I had been surprised when she ran away from the Furminator, and my husband's experience gave me hope. I tried his trick of rubbing her ears, and petting her head while using the Furminator. She enjoyed it, didn't run away, was purring a happy purr, and I got a ton more fur off of her. I'm going to retry the shorthairs soon, because they have too much fur (it comes off when I pet them). If the Furminator still annoys them, I'll stick with plan A - the Zoom Groom. They do eventually get tired with that, and run away, but at least I'll be getting some out. Since the Furminator works well, and it's my cats' personal preference not to like it (at first), I am still giving this 5 stars. It seems to be well-made, and comes with a plastic clip that goes over the tines to protect them (the clip comes attached to the info sheet that comes with the device, so don't throw it away thinking it's just packing material! It's to protect the comb from being damaged..They do warn you not to use the Furminator only on one spot (it works very well, and you don't want your kitty having thin or bald spots!)

SEE UPDATE: Is it sick to be in LOVE with a cat-brush? Wow!!! And GREAT price ($18) on Amazon; $43 at Petko
UPDATE: My original review below still stands, but I want to let everyone know, please do not overdue it with this brush unless you want a hairless kitty-cat. I was brushing my cat every other day with this, only for a few minutes and he really seemed not to mind it. But after the first week (I probably used it three or four times until I stopped getting huge mounds of hair...), I noticed a bald spot a little bit smaller than the size of a dime on his back, right in the middle. Upon a closer look, I also noticed that his coat was very thin all along the entire top of his back (his sides and bottom were fine). Although the skin did not seem irritated in any way and he wasn't scratching, I was pretty concerned....I did some research on "Fuminators" and "bald spots" and heard that this was common with some cats only if you overused it. They said the bald spot should grow back hair relatively quickly (and it did). So, no more Furminator until the hair on his back gets fuller, and only then will I used it only once every few weeks, concentrating mainly in the sides where the hair is fuller. ORIGINAL REVIEW: I've gone through lots of different cat brushes (nylon, rubber, metal tipped etc.) and although they do an OK sort of job in getting some of the top cat hair, I was constantly dealing with cat hair all over my stove, furniture, glass top tables etc. In NO WAY did they remove the amount of hair (the top coat and the undercoat) that the Furminator removed. After once use of the Furminator, all I can say is WOW. Only two minutes of "gently" brushing along his back and sides, I easily removed enough hair to make a new cat.....Yes, I cloned my cat with this......he was looking at the mound of fur with one of those "...and WTF is THIS" look. And the comb is super easy to clean, too. After a few stokes of this thing, you can easily pull off the entire wad of hair from the comb and then immediately get back to Furminating. I take the tufts of hair and throw them out the window (I'm on the 31st floor, so they're probably ending up clogging some sewer pipe in the City). Anyway, I did about three 1-2 minute brushing sessions, and I could definitely see the difference it made, with no more noticeable loose hair laying on the stove top or counter tops days later(e.g., also when I would pet him and scratch his back, I didn't see any of those loose hairs flying off of his back or tail, either) scratching him). Amazing. This brush is also very comfortable to hold, very sturdy and well made. Although some folks are saying that this version is not the "real thing", let me tell you...this is one very excellent copy! As far as I can see, this $18.00 brush is EXACTLY the same (even including the packaging) as the $45 one sold at other pet stores. Note: Just as an aside, my cat really does not love getting his hair brushed, period. Like me at work, he just sort of tolerates the experience, so I really need to work fast (i.e., he doesn't hate it, he just won't lay down long enough and let me comb him properly...he let's me get two or three strokes in before he starts squirming and rolling around, or getting up and trying to walk away, making me constantly follow after him to get in a quick brush or two), but again, that's with any brush, not just the Furminator.

Works well on short hair cats, too.
I am highly allergic to my three, wonderful fur babies, so it's a constant battle trying to keep cat hair at bay. I have three cats, each with very different fur styles. I'll review this product for each. I use the Long Hair version for all three cats. Cat 1: Has long, fairly thick fur, especially on his sides and tail. The texture ranges from fine to smooth (it is matte, not shiny). The Furminator works well, particularly on his back/sides. However, it's fairly easy to accidentally create bald spots, so watch out! Cat 2: Has short, dense, thick, shiny fur (she is a calico). The Furminator works very well, all over this cat. (Unfortunately, she doesn't like having her sides touched or brushed.) I did accidentally give her a semi-bald spot on her spine the first time I used the Furminator, but I've learned to curtail my enthusiasm and don't have this problem anymore. Cat 3: Has medium-short fur that is neither thick nor sparse; texture is smooth and matte (she is a dilute calico). This brush works pretty well for Cat #3, especially around the base of her tail/spine where the fur is denser. It can be difficult to get the brush to grip the shorter, more spaced-out hairs on the sides of her body- she really needs to be stretched out to get the brush working on those areas. She is the most tolerant cat I've ever met, so this isn't an issue. (However, Cat #2 would never allow this, so you might take that into consideration if your cat is unlikely to let you man-handle it.) Tips: It's easy to get carried away with the wonder of removing so much extra fur for the first time. All three of my kitties had a few sparse patches after the first time. Fortunately, it only took a few weeks for them to look normal again. I don't use the fur ejector thing, as I find it easier (and more effective) to just wipe the blade on the carpet. The cats do get a bit over-stimulated with this brush at times. It's all about the angle- you've got to get the blade at the correct angle to the fur in order to properly utilize this tool.

The best comb for cat
Before purchasing this comb, I was always puzzled by my cat’s hair. It is a short-haired, one-year-old cat whose hair flew everywhere in my house. I have bought several combs from Walmart but the effect was poorly. The first time I heard about of the FURminator deShedding Tool from my friend who bought it and worked effectively on his cat’s hair. I checked out Amazon and fortunately, the comb was discounted so I bought it immediately. Even though it is still pricey after discount, I think the money was well spent. first impression When I took it out of the box, the first thing I found was that it was really heavy. I bought a large size short hair FURminator deShedding tool, so it is 1.8 * 3 * 6 inches and nearly 6 ounces. The comb head has the short stainless steel teeth, which is well-made. On the back of the comb head, it has a button to release hair with ease. The handle is a good design and it is really comfortable when I hold it. Get to use My cat was very excited when I brushed her hair. It was not very smoothly when I brushed her, but it brushed out a lot of cat’s hair. There was a heap of my cat’s hair that I did not think could come from her. It is really useful and powerful. Thanks for the good design of the comb head, my cat really enjoyed her comb and kept snoring. Don’t worry about the stainless steel teeth of the deShedding edge would damage the coat or cut the skin of the cat, it reaches through topcoat to safely. In addition, it removes easily the undercoat and loose hair of the cat. Suggestion 1. If you are also puzzled by your cats’ hair, I strongly recommend you to use FURminator deShedding tool, which it is one of the best combs for cats in the world. 2. I recommend using the FURminator deShedding tool once a week for about 15 minutes. 3. If possible, I recommend brushing your cats outside, then you will not be puzzled by your cats’ hair flying anywhere in your house.

Try to enjoy your time with them when doing this
It does what it says. It does not provide a hair free home, in fact you will have more hair than before. I did not think they could have improved on such a chore. but they did with this design AND the technique you should use to get the most out of each brush stroke. The design kinda requires you maintain some form of that angle toward the fur (when you come into contact with skin, angle top of head [not the whole brush. Hold it straight up and down and then push head a little forward to get the angle] a few degrees forward. This angle is what does it) so to collect hair ON the brush. It takes hair off so well you will find bails of hair flying away, on the sheets, the sofa and so on. You cant brush more than a few times, at a time, in order to collect hair on the brush (it only holds so much at a time), otherwise it collects on your pet and everywhere else. Flatten pet, angle, brush just a few times and remove hair and start again. Once, or twice a week, is all you need. I brush 4 times, remove hair, and do over several times until much less hair, BUT dont overdue, or you will find bald patches (I had to wait three weeks for one of our friends hair to grow back) and you are done. Takes a few minutes. And when you think you are done, look your pet once over and you may find tufts of hair brushed away that didnt make it on brush and just get those too. The button is OK, but you can pull the hair away yourself (your choice). The pattern would be comb [and hold] edge at an angle, 4 strokes and then remove the hair collected and place where the cats wont try to eat, or lick it (or try to remove it from the trash to play/eat) and brush again. Careful. The handle is heavy (perhaps to aid in the angle motion) so gentle when doing their head (or thump) and down the body you will have to hope they flatten their hips (rear legs) so you dont bump into them while brushing (and possibly cause bruising under the skin). No marking which way to fasten teeth protector (you will need it because teeth will break and may cause injury so this guard is a must), but the extra space side goes to the bottom of the brush head (down). Try to enjoy your time with them when doing this. They do appreciate it and realize it, especially after noticing a newer form of brushing and the result. I think they can feel the difference with FAR less hair). You should also realize this isnt your ordinary kind of brushing, so careful. It is new in weight, style, discipline and result. It will be worth it once you master it. And both female and male cats have nipples so I havent yet been able to even consider their tummies. Best left alone. The gentler you are the more they will look forward to the effort which will turn out a way of showing them your affection. Brush slow, not fast.Do not press hard against their skin, just to get through coat. The blades are not really sharp so there isnt a cutting action. It is more of a pull/raking action (test it on an old towel. It will not cut the threads, but pull them out. That should tell you how effective the teeth design on The Furminator is. Problem with AMZN selling counterfeit product. Manufacturer (good customer support) tells me 1. Only get it from Amazon themselves as seller and 2. No hologram (small, paw sticker at upper left facing of packaging and under platic cover), dont get it. And the newer models have the push button. You WILL be impressed with how much hair your pet actually has that it doesnt need and walks around with (and manages to eat through licking) after using The Furminator. And the AMZN pricing is $15 less (and no s/h) than locally. But if I couldnt be sure it was the real product, I would have had to spend the extra money. Good work, guys ((United Pet Group)! Wonderful product. Thank you. Now if only I could find a use for the bags of hair collected? Warm material. Maybe filler for stuffed toys, or comforters, but they would have to be cleaned first (allergens). If you come up with ideas, let us Amazonites know.

========== UPDATE ========== I just bought a replacement Furminator from Amazon. There was some question about it being a fake. This has all the patent labels and trademarks of a Furminator and as far as I am concerned is the real thing. The spring action, feel, and weight are all identical to the original I purchased in a pet store--but at a more affordable price. And STILL worth every penny. P.S. my missing Furminator still has not shown up. I suspect my kitties have created a shrine for it in some dark corner and are worshiping it. ============================ I lost my Furminator. Let the hairball regurgitation begin! It's peak of the shedding season with four cats, and any surface they lie on is blanketed with cat hair. I've seen reviews saying this costs too much, and I was hesitant to purchase it. However, even after paying full price in a pet store, I can tell you that I will replace the lost one with another of this brand--saving a few dollars here on Amazon. After misplacing the Furminator, I tried the stack of brushes and combs of various types I used to use. None removed one tenth of the hair that Furminator does. Some were almost useless. I packed them away. I could have paid for a couple of Furminators easily and been much happier. What's not to like about Furminator? Still, I'll mention a couple of caveats first. These would not prevent me from buying this tool; they are merely instructions for its proper use. * The Furminator is heavy relative to other brushes (but not too much for my mildly arthritic wrists). This in combination with the sharp comb edge (which is necessary for fur removal) necessitates a gentle hand for more sensitive kitties and directly over the spine. My 18-year-old kitty was literally skin-and-bones the last couple of years of her life due to liver failure. She did not groom herself well, and the Furminator helped keep the previously frequent mats from forming. I had to be gentle in using it and dole out grooming sessions in small increments, as it has quite a "pull" to it. She was always a sensitive cat and more so in her late years. The others love it and curl around my legs trying to out-compete each other for Furminator time. I'll make a confession here. I used an idle moment to comb one kitty with the Furminator while sitting in the bathroom once (Too much info, I know!) Now I can't get any peace in there with all the scratching at the door. They seem to think any time I walk into the bathroom is their grooming time. * It is very efficient. You need to eject the hair frequently. This is a GOOD thing! I am constantly amazed at how fast the of hair piles up. Of course, how much depends on how frequently you remember to brush. The spring-loaded ejector button is very handy for ejecting the hair quickly one-handed, but you can just pull the hair out with your other hand easily. * I read one review that said you had to know when to stop or you could create a bald patch. I haven't run into this, and I think it would take excessive grooming to take that much hair out. I brush a lot. The results have been phenomenal: huge amounts of dead hair removed (the dry, undercoat, not the live, healthy hair); far fewer hairballs and stepping in vomitus in the night; less matting, especially in the long-haired kitty; less hair all over my bed and pillows. It's well-made and solid. I've owned mine for several months and use the long-hair type for my long- and short-haired kitties. I have not compared the Furminator for short-haired kitties. It is by far, one of the best inventions ever for the daily maintenance and health of my kitties and worth every penny. Oh, by the way, I am a retired veterinarian, so I guess you can add that it's veterinarian approved.
