Magic globe of the world!
If you understand a bit about the dynamics of magnetic induction and closed loop fields though, it is fairly intuitive. The globe has a magnetic element in it, and the base develops a circle of counter fields. If you get out of the center, the sweet spot, the globe will attract. To make it work, First MAKE SURE THE BASE IS SITTING LEVEL. This cannot be overstated, otherwise it will never balance. With the base turned on, hold the globe with your fingertips and level the equator with respect to the surface of the base a couple of inches above the surface. You will sense the globe being pulled to the base. Center the axis of the globe over the surface of the base and slowly lower the globe. You will sense when you find the equilibrium point and the globe will float. When I set mine up it only took one try. Since then, it has been the same.As for appearance, family enjoy it, and it is a wonderful conversation piece. It is also something to focus on when you need to brood over a problem or idea. If you get one, I suspect you will find it much the same. If you get it for your kids, challenge them to learn the principles of magnetism and how this levitating globe works.
