A heavy opaque pigment, Mars Black is a dense black color with a brown undertone. It is made from mineral iron oxide and was therefore named after the alchemical name for iron: Mars.

As I replace old, used tubes, I gravitate to this brand.

As an artist, I have every brand of paint, but nothing beats Winsor Newton. As the years pass, some tubes get hard and only with a palette knife, will the paint be malleable. Other times, the oil separates from the pigment and makes a mess. But with WN, I never have that problem. Juicy, great pigment, never separates and very reasonably priced. There colors are consistent, coverage is great, and goes on smoothly. As I replace old, used tubes, I gravitate to this brand.

I have to say this is worth its price. Great for transparency and a game changer for layered work! I never see this in stores so I’m glad I could find a reasonable sized tube here.
