SURF CHAMPIONS DO COME FROM ARIZONA
A great all time surf story with such memorable characters! The tale of young man with a dream in an Arizona surf pool who makes to Hawaii and must mix with locals, a surf legend, a great character named Turtle, and of course, a beautiful Hawaiian girl. But it is more than a story, the cast and script carry the emotions of failure and hate so deeply you are there with them in every moment. Great job, a legend in teh surf world.

Retelling of Ride the Wild Surf
An 80s retelling of the 60s Ride the Wild Surf. It does have an all-star cast of surfers making cameos and Gerry Lopez. It explores the soul surfer aspect but suffers from production that can't tell a kick-out from a wipe-out.

First time on Blu-ray and looks Great!
So this cult classic from the '80s is just making its high definition optical disc debut in 2021... long wait, but well worth it. The new Blu-ray has been handled with care by distributor Kino Lorber .. the best this film has ever looked on any format. I found the streaming version to be an older print and not very impressive, but this new presentation on Blu is rich and vibrant, boasting the best resolution possible. Several shots are breathtakingly beautiful! And just as important, the sound is AMAZING.. DTS-HD Master 2-Channel (original and lossless). The special features include director and producer commentary and also, interviews with the entire cast from 2002. They gathered everyone from Kiani to Chandler to Turtle.. who all tell great stories about their involvement and the making of one of the very best surf classics to ever grace the silver screen... North Shore!

surf cliche fodder and hollywood cheez with slight acknowledgement of Hawaiian culture
total macho idiocy but also has some classic moments and tells the truth here and there. Jerry character is hilarious and Laird is a fitting villain. Love story is kind of sweet, albeit superficial. Nia Peebles holds it all together. Must watch for 80's knuckleheads and pop surf-lore newbs.

This movie would be great if you're not from Hawaii
This movie would be great if you're not from Hawaii. First, the locals boys are portrayed very poorly, so typical of mainland mentality. 2nd, a teenage surf champion from Arizona who learns to surf in a pool with man made waves, is going to Hawaii and surf, real waves, from the ocean and does it unexpectedly well enough for someone who has never been in the ocean. I think one of the most authentic parts is when Gregory Harrison teaches him that true surfers, does it for the enjoyment, not for the fame and glory . . he also taught him how to study the water, how to watch for the low and high tides, the placement of the coral reef, etc, which is usually taught at a young age . . I especially like the parts with Gerry Lopez, one of my favorites, but if you know your way around Hawaii, watch the surfing closely, you will notice, he surfing at different locations, from the North Shore all the way to the West Side . . . One minute he's surfing lefts, and then he switches and surfing rights . . . and no offense, but I hope you "mainlanders" do not watch this movie and think, oh yeah, I just need a few months in Hawaii with a surfing instructor and then I too can surf Waimea, Healeiwa, Sandy's, etc. etc. because let me tell you, if you are not a surfer, there is no way in you can learn to surf perfectly by mastering the board and wave like that, not in a matter of weeks, even if you did surf every day, you could not master it like that. Surfing, is s sport, like any other sport, you need the take the time to gain experience so you can really learn it, tweak it, perfect it. If it was that easy, half the tourist coming to Hawaii, would al be professional surfers . . . . I think it was a pretty good movies for the younger children to learn valuable lessons about surfing. . . LOL, yeah, almost like the Karate Kid, but on a board in the ocean . .

Brilliant despite the cheese. A recommended buy!
A thoroughly enjoyable watch, despite the cheesy/dated nature. In fact I think that makes it better! Like slipping back in time. This is a film I could watch over and over again. Great feel good factor. From a wave pool in the desert to conquering the North Shore big waves it follows the journey of a character called Rick Kane. I love the fact that the main character works through an evolution of surfboards as he learns to really appreciate the ocean, the waves and surfing. This highlights the 'roots' of surfing in a way that makes you want to go and try loads of different boards. Some of the big names in surfing are in the film in their younger days.... Gerry Lopez, Laird Hamilton, Derek Ho, Occy, and Thompson. Laird plays the arrogant 'baddie' in the film, and Lopez a local tough nutt who is a 'goodie' at heart. Brilliant film. Bargain price - get it!When the DVD arrived I put it into my computer to watch and it came up as 'Blue Juice' and I was worried the wrong dvd had been put in the right box, but after pressing play it was definitely North Shore that played, so don't panic of the same happens to you!

Surf Movie
I have a collection of surf movies and wanted this one to add to that collection. Not as good as Big Wednesday but has similar theme's to other surf movies where the main character is getting into the pro surf scene, but has self conflict with soul surfers.

Classic
For those who have seen Surfs Up, this is a similar story but with humans rather than penguins. Features the legend Gerry Lopez, along with other famous surfers. Nia Peeples on horseback is a sight to behold. Soul surfer's sunday sojourn

Blast from the past
A film from my youth.... Many many years ago... Great that Amazon still sell films like this that probably weren't a box office sensation, but for anyone who surfed during the late 80's early 90's would remember this.
