One of the great surprises of my music collecting life
80 years ago, Bach was rarely performed anywhere. He was considered staid and dull. Just 50 years ago the same can be said of Vivaldi. Now they are recognized as giants. Telemann deserves to be in their company. If you want to know why, get this box. Top shelf performers in fantastic recordings. This has a huge variety of styles and genres--the only thing they all have in common is they are excellent. This isn't classical to feel superior about. Your kids will like it. Your dog will wag its tail. You won't want to stop playing it. Generally when I get a box set, no matter how excited I am after the first few disks, it starts to pall, and sameness creeps in. Not so with this box. That said, I got it from a local store for about half Amazons $80 price. Still worth it, but get it for cheaper if you can.

This is a great bargain - particularly if you grab a copy from Amazon.de (or other German online sellers), which are are selling this box set for the absurd price of 20 Euros. Even without documentation and the variable quality of some of the recordings, the sheer number of top quality recordings - including great performances by the Kuijken family and Camerata Koln - are worth it.

Good selection of music
Good selection of music, but no literature, no booklet, nata. No telling where and when each disk was recorded either. The box is 1/3 empty.

Great music but very poor presentation.
Trying to figure out a balanced rating for this box set is difficult because as the last reviewer said there is no literature, no booklet, nothing. Nor is there any link to a website to download any of these things. Very poor, Sony, very poor! No stars there then. So the four stars then are solely for the music which is excellent. As this year is the 250th Anniversary of Telemann's death it was always on the cards that the record companies would put together collections of his music. I already have the Brilliant Classics 50 disc Telemann edition which in many ways complements this box because there are not too many overlaps. And there is access to their website for full details and texts where necessary (see Sony it can be done). So what's in the Box? Discs 1 - 3 - 12 "Paris" Quartets; The Kuijken brothers and Gustav Leonhardt. Discs 4 - 7 - Essercizii Musici; Camerata Koln. Discs 8 - 12 - "Der Getreue Musikmeister"; Camerata Koln with vocal soloists. Discs 13 & 14 - 11 Wind Concertos; Camerata Koln. Disc 15 - 3 Concertos from "Tafelmusik" & Gamba Ouverture in D; Collegium Aureum. Disc 16 - 3 Ouverturen and a Concerto; Freiburg Barockorchester/Gottfried von der Golz. Disc 17 - 3 Ouverturen; Camerata Koln/Michael Schneider. Disc 18 - Concertos; L'Orfeo Barockorchester/Michi Gaigg, Kammerorchester Basle/Julia Schroder, Ensamble 1700/Dorothee Oberlinger. Discs 19 & 20 - Trio Sonatas for Flute; Bruggen, Kuiken brothers, Dombrecht, Bylsma, Pollard & Leonhardt. Discs 21 & 22 - 12 Sonate Metodiche; Boston Museum Trio, Bruggen, Bylsma, Leonhardt, de Vries, Mouller, van Asperen. Disc 23 - Die Tageszeiten; Soloists, Freiburg Vocalensamble, Collegium Musicum Freiburg/Wolfgang Schafer. Disc 24 - Cantatas; various performers. Disc 25 - Secular Cantatas; Soloists & Collegium Aureum. Discs 26 - 28. Opera "Flavius Bertaridus"; Soloists, Academia Montis Regalis/Alessandro de Marchi. Discs 29 & 30 - Opera "Orpheus"; Soloists, L'Orfeo Barockorchester/Michi Gaigg. TWV numbers are given except for discs 8-15 and 21-23. Discs 19 & 20 carry T numbers. Good job there is online access to the TWV verzechnis. So on to the music. Reading the list of performers is like a who's who in early music. You expect the best of the performers and by and large you get it . Camerata Koln perform over a third of the box and consistently impress in their performances they also sound wonderful from the chamber works to the Concertos of discs 13 & 14 and the Ouvertures of Disc 17. The discs of the Paris Quartets and the Methodic Sonatas are also very good. In fact all the performers at least give very good performances and some are really excellent, although I feel the discs of the Collegium Aureum do now sound somewhat dated. In fact apart from silly slip ups such as having the same performance of the Ouverture TWV 55D6 on disc 15 and 25 as well as a better performance of it on disc 17, 2 versions of TWV 52a1, some doubling up of works from Essercitzi Musici and Der Getreue Musicmeister on discs 19 & 20, and no texts or even synopsis for the choral works and operas; this is a pretty good box of a glimpse into Telemann's work throughout his life. Cautiously recommended but it could have been so much better.

In ogni caso ottimo acquisto....
