This is an amazing dictionary for anyone studying sociology it is very helpful for homework.

If you buy a certain book you are looking for a specific results, and the purchase was for my son. He stress he learned from it.

Somewhat outdated but good for sociological terms and phenomenon before 21st century

Voilà un excellent dictionnaire de sociologie, avec des définitions (la plupart du temps) claires et détaillées. De quoi en faire un bon compagnon de travail. Il est construit sur le même principe que celui, en français, édité par l'Encyclopédie Universalis, mais avec un nombre d'entrées plus important. Le fait qu'il soit en anglais m'a au départ fait hésiter, mais le vocabulaire employé est accessible. Finalement, le seul défaut de ce dictionnaire est la taille de la police de caractères utilisée. Je retire du coup une étoile, car si le fond est ce qui importe le plus, là-dessus les auteurs font le job, l'éditeur ne doit pas se moquer des lecteurs (small is somtimes more painful than beautiful).

I see this book as a companion to the dictionary of politics. Just started reading, so can't say much. Came across the term 'Formal Rationaity' and 'substantive rationality ', terms coined by Max Weber. I believe that knowledge in itself is worth more than the price of the book.

This is an exciting, intellectually stimulating and comprehensive A-Z guide to sociology. There are over 2000 wide-ranging entries in this 4th edition(2014) including bioographies of the founding figures Marx, Weber & Durkheim as well as key modern sociologists Christine Delphy, Michael Mann & Dorothy Smith. John Scott's 'Dictionary of Sociology' explains complex ideas in an accessible and engaging way. It is highly recommended to sociology students and also the general reader wishing to gain some understanding of this fascinating subject.

I am a student at a University in Canada, studying Psychology and Sociology. I purchased this book to aid in creating a better understanding of Sociological theorists, theories, and the imagination itself. I like the layout and find the definitions easy to read and understand. For $11, being able to enhance my education with this is an asset, They make other ones for different subjects as well, so I’d say make the purchase if you’re serious about upping your study habits and learn.
