“The Gloaming have become an international phenomenon, thanks to their virtuoso blend of Irish traditional influences and experimentation” - The Guardian’s guide to Unmissible Culture of 2016 The Gloaming enhance traditional Irish music with the best sounds from contemporary classical, post-rock, jazz and experimental music. Irish fiddlers Martin Hayes and Caoimhin Ó Raghallaigh and sean-nós singer Iarla Ó Lionáird are joined by two Americans—New York pianist Thomas Bartlett (aka Doveman), and Chicago-born guitarist Dennis Cahill. In early 2016, they will release their second self-titled album—also known as 2. The band’s self-titled debut fused & transformed tradition, defining a kind of “Irish classical music” that did not previously exist. It was widely acclaimed as one of the finest recordings of 2014, making year-end best lists from NPR Music, the Irish Times, the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards and winning the Meteor Choice Music Prize (the “Mercury Prize” of Ireland). Their touring calendar has been equally impressive, including notable nights at the White Light Festival at New York’s Lincoln Center, a rare UCLA/USC co-presentation at Los Angeles’ Bovard Auditorium and concerts with major presenters in Chicago, Minneapolis, Seattle, Michgian, et al. Internationally they performed at the Ceiliúradh at London’s Royal Albert Hall (a celebration of the Irish president’s first-ever state visit to Britian); at Australia’s Sydney Opera House; in Mexico City’s Teatro de la Ciuda; and headlined WOMAD festival dates in New Zealand, Australia and the United Kingdom. Their second album explores new harmonic voices, new moods and styles and songs, while delivering the uniquely visionary music that only a “supergroup” of master musicians can. More emotionally direct than the debut, Martin Hayes has proclaimed “The album has more feeling than the first—a simple joyfullness, euphoria and innocence.” RIYL: Sigur Ros, The Chieftans, Explosions in the Sky, Keith Jarrett, The Pogues

Another Keeper
As an American who knows nothing of the Irish language, and almost as little of the finer points of Irish music, I find this CD, like the self-titled first album, entirely fits my fantasy Ireland, which is a complicated and sometimes mournful, sometimes joyful, sometimes simultaneously joyful and mournful, expression of the longing and aspiration that makes us human. Go ahead and click "Add to Cart" now, then listen repeatedly. It will befriend and stir your heart, soothe your soul, and lighten a bit every day in which you listen to it.

Music at its very best
I loved the first Gloaming album, and this one is even better. Iarla O Lionaird's singing is absolutely lovely. Caoimhin O Raghallaigh's fiddling is sublime. Martin Hayes and Dennis Cahill are their great selves. And Thomas Bartlett's spare and judicious piano adds just the right touch. I listen to this album every single day and I give it away as a gift to lots of folks. You can't miss with this one.

A Bit of Heaven
If you liked The Gloaming's first album, you'll love this one. More of the same, but with music that is so beautiful and haunting and sublime, that's a wonderful thing. I really don't know how they do it. This is what Irish Heaven sounds like.

Wonderful group that sings in Irish
Wonderful group that sings in Irish. Listen to it all the time at work. Music very soothing and at times very uplifting. In June 2016 my husband and I traveled to the Kennedy Center in DC to see them. It was well worth it.
