According to scientific research, this is the amount of vocabulary needed for varying levels of fluency: โข 250 words: the essential core of a language. Without these words, you cannot construct sentences. โข 750 words: those that are used every single day by every person who speaks the language. โข 2,500 words: those that should enable you to express everything you could possibly want to say, although some creativity might be required. โข 5,000 words: the active vocabulary of native speakers without higher education. You will understand about 90% of all written text. โข 10,000 words: the active vocabulary of native speakers with higher education. โข 20,000 words: the amount you need to recognize passively in order to read, understand, and enjoy a work of literature such as a novel by a notable author. It is a good sized book and consequently legible. I thought it expensive at first but now I think it is good value for what it is. I have book 1 and find it far from easy so I dread to think of the level of books 3,4 and 5. You will need a basic knowledge of Greek to develop it with this book. It is not perfect, as some examples of everyday speech are extremely unlikely but you take your choice. To have repetition in different situations is key to understanding and this book ticks that box. If you have already made a start in learning Greek and can manage without being able to listen to the content, I recommend this book. Review: An invaluable resource for students of Modern Greek - Having initially been slightly daunted by the price, I am now delighted with my investment. The book is attractively and clearly presented and offers a rational, time-saving approach to acquiring Greek vocabulary. One might argue over the inclusion or non-inclusion of certain words, but the approach adopted (based on analysis of huge quantities of film subtitles) seems to me to be perfectly legitimate. The inclusion of examples for all 2525 entries is a considerable plus. My sole quibble is that some of the examples are a little complex for beginners. Deciphering the Greek for "Shipments of rough diamonds to and from free trade zones should be processed by the designated authorities" (example given for ฯฯฮฟฯ, No. 155) is rather tough if you only know 155 Greek words, but still, it's a challenge and my knowledge of Greek is growing by leaps and bounds!

Wonderful treasure for autonomous learners
I'm loving this book! In the age of AI slop, this is a breeze of fresh, human-curated air. The most frequent words all come with a sentence containing them, allowing you to learn not just a loose vocabulary item, but a sentence containing it. I use my grammar book and Wiktionary's inflection tables to learn the grammar in the sentences. A marvelous resource for the self-teaching language learner.

Low quality.
Some pages are already falling apart and I just opened it. Regarding the content, the sentences are fine, but some pronounciation audio would have been nice.
