Missing manual
I love this book. For one thing the manual that came with my Canon G11 has really small type which does not work with my middle aged eyes ;) This book explains all the operations and button galore that is part of the G11 in clear text and great photos. I also explains how to take unique photos with this camera. All in all a fine book that I highly recommend.

Lots of tips
This Digital Field Guide is certainly better than Canon's instruction manual. It contains a lot of illustrations and plenty of tips, some very interesting, others too basic. On the negative side: the structure of this book is a little bit confusing. The first chapters replace and complement the instruction manual, the three other chapters give information about Light and color, Movies and Everyday Picture-taking situations. There are also appendices (but why is that on Rules of Composition an appendix and not a normal chapter?). If you want to know your G10 or G11 better, it is very useful. This book tells how you use the settings. However, I found the book from Jeff Carlson (From Snapshots to Great Shots) much more interesting, because it tells you why you should use some settings.

Pretty Impressive Handbook
This handbook does a really fine job at helping the G-11 owner to realize all the features of this tremendous camera.I was surprised to learn this camera has features even beyond what Canon's own user's guide describes.Great camera, pretty much replacing my XTi with its 18-200 MM lens, and the book helps me reveal its secrets.

Almost a beginners' book
This book costs about 3% the price of the camera it describes. That could make it a good option if you're in the market for a Canon G11 and want to see what it can do. But not once you own the camera.Mr. McLernon's book seems written for barely experienced photographers, the kind of folks not likely to choose the Canon PowerShot G11 over simpler models. This is an excellent camera that can intimidate beginners and many with intermediate skills. If that describes you somewhat, then this book will be an excellent choice for you.Photographers who already are comfortable with managing exposure settings in their entirety will not get value from this field guide. The reason I wanted a book was that the Canon User Guide that comes with the camera has tiny type, flimsy pages, and illustrations that can be hard to interpret. McClernon's guide is the opposite, but is not quite a substitute for the full coverage of the Canon product.I wanted revelations, some explanations that would help me identify and remember patterns in the menus and feature sets of the G11. Those weren't in this book. I get more by using the Canon guide's TOC and index than from the Field Guide. His writing is fine, and the photos McLernon chose to heavily illustrate this bulky book also approach excellent. But it looks like it's part of a production line of how-to books whose instruction values are targeted towards the casual shooter who wants her sports and portrait snapshots to look better. The G11 can do that for her, and that's why it's so popular with professionals and serious amateurs alike. Not with this book, though. It does not condescend, but neither does it will enlighten a reader who don't already know why she'd want exposure compensation or a fill flash or even a viewfinder.I think the only reason this is called the "...Field Guide" is because that's the name of the series. I won't take this book into the field because it's too big and heavy, and there's nothing of the "quick, how do I..." quality of a real field guide. In fact, I may not even want to keep it in my bookcase. Not to be condescending, but to describe where you stand in the universe of beginner to studio- or news-photographer skill level: A two-star photographer could buy this two-star book and gain some interesting and valuable skills. It's a good read, but not for advanced amateurs. If you don't get excited at receiving a free neutral gray card with the book, this it isn't the book for you.

Good information.
This is a very good, informative outline of your G11. If you are looking for a photography book you may want to buy a second book.

great for begginers
I got this for my wife who got this camera for Christmas and has no digital photography knowledge. She is doing just fine reading it and understanding how to work the camera.

too in-depth for me
this did not meet our requirement of an easy-to-use book of instructions that was over and beyond what comes w the camera itself. simply put, we didn't need it. it does little that the camera instructions did not do for us. if you are NOT an amature you may eat this book up, but it was useless to us. we would have returned it, but had made some marks on it before really looking it over. it has sat in a drawer since day 1 while our camera instructions are on top of the desk. we had read reviews that the instructions that came w the camera were not sufficient. we don't agree. that is probably because we are not fancy dance picture takers. we are 2 old people trying to use the easiest camera possible to shoot pics of our adorable grandkids. our canon g11 had sufficient instructions for us.

Excellent tutorial to learn how to use my G11
This was an excellent tutorial to learn how to use my G11. It is to bad that they not make a similar book for the Canon G1X Mark II.

Great Manual
I bought a G11 and found the owners manual lacking a bit.The Digital Field Guide books are a great reference and this one is excellent.Highly recommended

A useful book.
This book gives a reasonable explanation of the basic functions of the camera and, as such, it is worth having if the only other thing you have is the camera manual. But don't expect too much.

Useful substitute for the manual
If you have the wonderful little Powershot G11 and intend to get the best out of all it's options, you have two alternatives - print out the 120+ smaller-than-A5 pages of the Advanced Manual from the supplied disc - or buy this book.It doesn't have absolutely everything that's in the manual (e.g misses out the meanings of the 2 little lights by the viewfinder) but it's an excellent reference work while learning to use the very complex little camera. Two things against it - it's rather American in tone, and half of the pages are on general photographic topics (composition, lighting, etc) which purchasers of such a camera are likely to be familiar with anyway.
